Caviar Black WD1502FAEX 1.5TB Internal Hard Drive $99 after code

it does... these are great performing drives for everyday stuff... they also have a hitachi 2gb with code for same price... it's a pretty perky drive, too...

According to PassMark it is. I don't doubt that the Velociraptor has lower latency, better seek times and better random read/write performance, but PassMark rates this drive higher overall than any Velociraptor in its database.

At $100, this Caviar Black is expensive compared to other drives in its class, but it's still a fraction of the cost of a Velociraptor. I can't think of any reason why anyone would sink so much money into a Velociraptor these days when it costs as much as a decent SSD which smokes it performance-wise.

600gb, comapred to 128gb for a drive that makes response times and seek times feel as fast as a SSD! I'm not arguing that Platter drives is as good as a SSD, but for a system to "feel" faster, one may only need to look for a Velociraptor instead of a SSD! If you want your sustained xfer rates to maintain it's high rate, then SSD all the way!

heck, if I can, I'd get a RAMdrive! all you need to do is make sure your computer has power to it, the switch on the back of the PSU is flipped to on, and you're ready to rock and roll! (you're system doesn't need to be on)

You aren't making any sense, here. Velociraptors cost as much as/more than an SSD+a fast 7200RPM platter, and the latter arrangement is faster.

OK, now I understand. :sneaky:

I wont call any names or anything but with SSD $ per gb can not compare to anything else (they cost way more).. raptors are huge drives and expensive but not as much as SSD and ssd are always very small or CRAzy Expensive.

I use ssd in every computer but also use 1tb blacks too ((didnt you hype the f3 1tb in a diff thread?))

Since i didnt see a real review for the 1.5tb drive can just assume the stupid graph takes price per gb into the picture since the ssd's lose...... So its all pointless till we get a real review.

umm whats the best 1tb drive thats actually reliable? i check newegg review forthese and doesnt look to good. ;/ been waiting to buy a few 1tb drives but every single one looks all bad.

maybe the re4 drive WD1003FBYX ??
That would be my answer as well.
You call this "hyping"? Hyperbole much? 🙄
cost per gigabyte, Velociraptor still wins!
And it's still slower. You sound like a brochure, BTW.

Listen, I've already stated that SSD's are faster! However, If people are looking for quicker response times, load times, then a velociraptor drive can fit the bill, and give you 600GB.

we pay for premium when we adapt SSD's. But then again, not everybody transfers huge amounts of data everyday for it to merit the crazy 6GB/s transfer rate!

Changed out a 15k RPM drive with an SSD, no comparison, sorry.

Don't ever give people hard drive advice if PassMark is your basis for performance. Ever. If you can't think of scenarios where people would be best suited with a Raptor, then that just further confirms why you shouldn't be giving people hard drive advice.

Having used 4 generations of 15k SCSI drives in my home system starting with the original Cheetah the week they were released in the 2000 time frame, until transitioning to Raptors when they overtook SCSI drives for desktop superiority to my current SSD boot drive, with an endless string of 7200RPM storage drives, I'm no stranger to storage performance. Depending on my budget, there are times I would absolutely choose a Raptor over anything else including an SSD. Data security (the most important attribute of any hard drive), capacity, and price/capacity all favor the Raptor vs an SSD.

Maybe if you understood what he was saying, you wouldn't have to apologize for your poor reading comprehension. He never said an SSD was slower than a Raptor. Seriously, the FIRST sentence you quoted says he knows SSD's are faster. He clearly is saying that if you want a quicker drive compared to a standard 7200 RPM drive, which includes the WD Black, the Velociraptor may be the best choice for you. Which is an accurate statement.

Mmmmkay.

My point was, and is, if you need a faster drive than this, then it's an SSD, not a waste-of-money Velociraptor. Period.

Tech forums. Ya' gotta luvum... 😀

Yes, however the improvement isn't really that noticeable, going from a regular 7.2k RPM to 10k RPM or 15k RPM you will notice an improvement but not nearly as noticeable as going to an SSD. For laptop use where a 10k or 15k RPM drive just isn't an option the SSD is also a major game changer. He says people are looking for quicker response times and faster load times, except the order of magnitude a velociraptor will improve that isn't hardly worth it.

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/182?vs=152

The OCZ Vertex 2 beats the 600GB Velociraptor, I would rather spend $110 on that, plus $100 on the 1.5TB WD black, rather then $250 and $88 on a 1TB WD black.

$210 vs. $338 and both ways you get 1.6TB

Meh just my $.02

it's VERY noticeable. Immediately, I noticed loading files, booting into windows, and hell just opening and closing windows, you'll notice that on a Velociraptor, it's MUCH quicker than your typical run of the mill 7200 RPM drive. Performance sustains MUCH better than the 7200 RPM drives too!

I have 3 systems: 1 with velociraptor 300 with 2x 1TB drives, and 1 standard 7200 RPM black drive 500gb, and 1 with intel 160GB G2, and 2x 1TB drives 64MB cache. The velociraptor SMOKES the 7200 drives in boot time, just general windows usage! I mean it just MAKES the computer feels faster!

If I can afford it, I'd have a SSD, and velociraptor drives as my storage drives! (if they make a 1TB)

Regarding all this bickering about performance and value...

SLOW
5400RPM random brand 2TB HDD $70
3.5¢/MB

MEDIUM
7200RPM WD Black 1.5TB $100
6.7¢/MB

FAST
10,000RPM VelociRaptor 600GB
41.7¢/MB

ORGASM
SSD random brand 60GB $100
$1.67/MB

Every drive has their price point regardless of whether it fits your personal usage model.

Me? If I can get a VelociRaptor 600GB for 25¢/MB (assuming SSDs don't come down in price) I'd do it. I don't care if a 7200RPM HDD is cheaper/MB. I want performance and I can't afford a single 600GB SSD, so a VR600 is the next best thing. Well, not at today's pricing though. C'mon, WD, drop prices! Have credit card, will travel. In the meantime I have my old VelociRaptor 300GB serving as my games drive since my 128GB boot SSD won't fit anywhere near all my games, and I bought the VR300 BITD before the Intel G1 and Indilinx drives came out, so I may as well use it. I'm almost always first loaded into multiplayer games so it is still holding its own versus newer 7200RPM drives. The VR600 would actually be faster since it has higher density.

BTW I'm just talking about me personally. I wouldn't force other people to set up their computers exactly like I do mine. I would expect the same courtesy in return, but I guess that's asking too much.
