CAUTION: short MS Office rant inside (venting)

WHY CAN'T AN F'ING WORD PROCESSOR JUST TAKE YOUR INPUT AND PUT IT ON THE SCREEN?!!?!?! If I didn't have to use stupid templates wordpad would be my WP of choice. Try and move one line over and BAM there goes the whole paragraph, undo? Sure. Turn off autoformat? Found the option! Tab, BAM! "Undo autoformat"? I thought I disabled that?! STUPID PIECE OF CRAP!

ARGGGGG!!!!

The forums are a better word processor!

I'm at work. If it's not MS it's... well, you know...

And I thought I DID turn off all the options to idiot proof it. Maybe I gotta go through regedit and change hkey_local_machine>software>microsoft>office key: annoying to "0" instead of "1"

What are you trying to do here? I'd help you, but it doesn't make much sense.

I was initially annoyed with all the autoformatting/autocorrecting features since Word 95, but I got used to it after a while and now I don't feel like using a word processor without such features.

Those features are enabled by default for people like me and for people who wantneed the "idiot proof" features (Word saved me so much typing so far by correcting stupid typos like "teh" into "the," etc.). And if you don't like it, just disable them. Looks like you were changing registry entries already.

A single piece of software cannot possibly satisfy every single person. At least Word allows you to customize its interfaces to satisfy as many as possible.

<< lol, i hate it when MS tries to think for you. >>

They spend $1 billion a year just to research on UI enhancements. i.e. The Task Pane and Smart Tags in Office XP are very nice and in many cases, saves me quite a few clicks, although I'm a heavy keyboard user.

To take another example from Office XP, my sisters have nearly no background in computers and they can easily figure their way out to do some simple typing, editing and formatting, once I told them to look at the task pane whenever they get stuck.

Star Office has that too, BTW.

Anyway, I have used Office 2000 for a few days and I was so glad to be able to use Star Office again. I stopped liking Office after Office 95 (I've used Office 97 as well).

Was I saying anything about StarOffice? Or were you just trying to teach me a few things? 🙂

I hated WordPerfect, but I'll give a shot at StarOffice, although it is very likely that I'll use Outlook 2002 and my main mail client and Word 2002 and my main word processor.

i hate star office. It loads soooo slowly on anything less than 600mhz with 128 megs of RAM. I have a 400mhz 96 meg system and it takes over 3 min to load.

Argh! Another brainwashed MS drone speaking... 😛

BTW don't just try SO 5.2, but the OpenOffice.org betas of 6.0 as well. The latter is much faster.

Try the OpenOffice betas and notice the difference.

I agree, StarOffice is great, it is free, it runs under Linux (which is also free)...

So for 0$ you can have an office pack, an OS, a SQL server, a web server, a ftp server, and an imaging program that is as powerful as the PS5... And once it is stable, it stays stable, every day, every minute.... if you close a program, NOTHING of that program is left in mem...

I know i have forgotten half of it, please go on....

Want another brainwashed statement? 🙂

"I can't stand any documents that don't use Verdana." 😉

VERDANA?!? ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND?!?!

Okay, I prefer Arial AKA Helvetica. Sue me 😛

Joohang is one person i take very seriously in this forum, from general to other forums we have had our arguments, and i have always respected his view...

But if he says that MS office is in anyway superior to star- open- kde and all the other fee office packages that you can use as one package within the great linux X-shell, i am going to burst wide open with foul comments and dirt...

Joohang... please tell me it aint so, please tell me that you are not an MS slave!!!

BTW, i was J/K about everthing except my respect for Joohang...

Yes, I agree. Microsoft's memory management sucks. I found most MS Office products quite stable, except for Outlook. It loves to screw up and there are bugs and glitches that hasn't been addressed since Outlook 98 days. (perhaps I should report it one day)

I haven't tried other office suites except for WordPerfect (and ancient DOS products), so I won't comment on those. However, Office XP has been great for me so far and I have no plans to switch over to another products.

Bear in mind that I get most of Microsoft products for free, though. 🙂 So "free" open source software don't look too attractive to me. Perhaps StarOffice does free up memory a lot better and run more stable than MS Word, but I haven't seen my MS Word crashing in years and considering today's cost of RAM, it's inferiour memory management isn't too bad for my use. And Patrick, I have a hard time believing your statement that StarOffice frees up ALL MEMORY once you close the program. Are you sure about that? Every single byte of it? 🙂
