Just tell him to not do it in the house, if he doesnt comply then ask him to move out. Dont be an idiot though.

Depends what you think is the negatives of his smoking pot on your property, I suppose? It is your property and so your rules are the ones he should follow, but I think you're really blowing things out of proportion. What's the worst that could happen if he continued?

For me as a landlord........ it's not the pot smoking..... he can smoke outside. But the smokin g inside really would tee me off. It's relly hard if not impossible to get the smoke smell out (funk febreeze :p). Just keep that sh!t outside.

You can get pot smoke smell out of a room in about 5 minutes with no problems, and you don't need fabreeze or anything just an open window.
I allow people to smoke pot in my place, but not cigarettes. A lot of my friends do the same.

Where's the option for "talk to him about it"?

Yeah really. Be a man and confront him about it.
WINNAR

I agree with this option. Only because he is a childhood friend. But I think he is taking advantage of the friendship by thinking he can break the rules and not have any consequences. Like the OP said it was explained NO SMOKING in the house from day 1.

So talk to him and explain that becasue he is your close friend you will give him another chance, but there is no smoiking in the house especially drugs. If he doesn't listen again, then out he goes. You are putting yourself and your familiy at risk.

Will the OP get in trouble if cops search the home and find dope in it (not in OPs room, but perhaps stashed in kitchen?)

Call the cops, that will show him!

Seriously, it sounds like you could use a hit or 2 yourself.

hmmm, some people are claiming it's easy to get the smell of pot out of a room, but I wonder if that's just because they've become used to it. Anytime I've visited a house/room of someone that habitually smokes anything, including pot, I can smell it even if they aren't lighting up.

If he is renting a room from you he has an expectation of privacy in that room. He could possibly have you charged with breaking and entering especially if the room was locked, UNLESS your rental agreement specifically allows for you to enter his room at any time without notice (i.e. he waived this expectation of privacy by entering into a contract with you).

Also, you guys live in georgia (so it's relatively warm there), why not tell him to put a box fan in the window, and have it blowing towards the outside?

So I come home lastnight and the door is locked, not too unusual. The as I unlock and open it I see my roommate quickly walking to his closet to put his bong away. I then enter his room and it smells like pot. He's kinda sharp so he starts ranting and raving about the new iphone and showing all that jazz. While doing that I notice a lighter in his hand. That was lastnight. Now I'm just trying to figure out what I should do. My parents own this place and smoking of anything has been banned since day one but I've let it slip on the back porch for about 6 months. On the one hand he's been getting on my nerves a lot lately but on the other hand the extra $600 is nice.

I dunno if I should just give him the boot right now or make his life a living hell. Keep in mind I've known him since 4th grade and at one point he was my best friend.

What are you doing unlocking and entering your roommates room. Your parents may own the home but he pays rent and that does not give you the right to unlock and enter his room.

How have you been letting it slip when people smoke on the back porch? Its outside and as long as people pick up thier butts nobody would ever know.

I bet you took names when the teacher left the room.

As a true "conservationist", I can tell you that very little of the pot I might smoke if I did indeed do such a thing escapes to sully the atmosphere. My lungs, otoh . . .

Face it, OP. He's your housemate and undoubtedly knows about the extensive kiddie pr0n on your hard drive. If you narc on him, buttwipe, you're going down harder (so to speak). :p

BS. pot smoke doesn't linger liek tobacco. It's spilling bong water, tracking resin everyhwere that causes the funk. Interesting, occurences of bongs being tipped onto carpets increase with frequency as a direct proportion to bong usage ;)

Those little ozonators, or whatever they're called, work very well. Also, opening a window is just as effective.

Did you unlock and enter his room or are you talking about the house?

If you are entering his room then he is probably already looking for another place to stay.

Are you kidding me?

Threaten a long time friend by telling him you will call the cops on him for smoking weed? Do you live under a rock?

Why would the cops even show up in the first place? only reason would be narcing.

However, if you live close to a school, that could be very bad. Police might actually be notified, and the penalty is much more severe based on proximity to a school.

again-you're smelling bong water spills, and they probably just smoked right before you showed up.

and no; I've never smoked constantly enough to get used to it (well...there was college...)
