I went to south Texas to go catfishing with my brother. We were using trotlines with huge live bait hoping to land a couple big catfish. Should of seen my face when this thing came up out of the water. At first I though it was an alligator (they are there). It was fun trying to get this thing into the boat.

<---used to like fishing for large mouth bass

<< Holy crap! Are you stuffin that thing? >>

No, some old guy who fishes all the time came over and cleaned it. He had to get a saw just to get through it's skin. He said it was one of the last prehistoric fish on the planet. I tried a small piece of the meat. It wasn't bad. It was tougher than regular fish. Almost like chicken. He showed me pictures of alligator gars he caught that were double the size of mine!

<< hehehe this is a cute picture Text >>

lol. kinda gross looking cuz the fish is all slimy, but at least she's sitting on a newspaper "saddle".

<<As I understand it Gar are no good for eatin'>>

Ever eat whitefish-based artificial crab meat? It tastes very similar. You can also pickle the meat; since its not as hardy as meat from other fish the pickling gives it body. The trouble is gripping that darn notochord and yanking it through its neck hole. Some people make the mistake of using fillet knives on their armor, but tin snips cut through them in short order. I have only done it a couple of times because of the hard work to clear the notochord, but the ones I did were actually tasty. A gar that big would have been alot easier than the 2-pounders I did. Not much different than eating sturgeon.

I like large catfish like that, too. Very easy to steak out a fish that big.

I live in South Texas. Where at did you go fishing?
Alot of my friends love the taste of Gar, they grow HUGE down here in the river beds.

* Nueces River! I live about 10 minutes from it. Did you put-out at the turn-around at LaBonte Park?

Wow you must be really freakin strong holding a 64lbs fish out like that with one hand..... when im at the gym i do a excerise like that and i can onyl do it with 20lbs.....the really big guys can do like 50-60lbs max.

Wow!!! Nice fish!!!

The biggest fish I've caught was a 30" Northern from a small pond behind my house. There are no big fish where I live 🙁

BTW, AudiPorsche,. he isnt holding it up one-handed. Its hanging from a stringer or rope, and he just has his hand up there.

damn dude. damn. thats a pretty good sized fish. for a river, at least. nueces eh? hope theres nothing like that in the comal eating tubers
