cats with white fur/blue eyes are deaf?

is this always true? my cat is white w/ blue eyes... I'm going to have to try some experiments... 😉
 
I don't have any pet cats, but from what I've dealt with cats, they are very intelligent and very lazy.... I mean that they are smart enough to ignore you so that they don't have to get up or anything... genius plan. I'll have to try that sometime, probably won't work.
 
My friend had one that was deaf, and its nerves were shot by the time I broke up with her. 😀

I'd sneak up on it & grab it, or move it really quick. Scared the poor thing half to death.
 
Blue eyed white male cats are almost always deaf.... just a genetic thang.

edit: oops, forgot the white part. Tired... bedtime...

 
I think all-white cats w/blue eyes usually are... not too hard to tell. Does s/he come running from another room if you call (or use the can opener 😛)? Or if you are behind her out of sight, try making a noise and see if you get her attention.

Edit - didn't realize it was males only, is your's a tom (or former tom), eyor?
 
It was a Tom, indeed. I have heard this before, but it always said "most" and "many" of such cats were deaf. You really wouldn't notice it if you weren't looking for it though.
 
Yes, ALL cats with PURE white fur and blue eyes are deaf. No exceptions unless it's a mutant. It's a genetic anomaly like albinoism. My friend has one and she's done her research. 🙂
Pretty damn smart for a deaf cat though.
 
My grandfather has a ALL white cat with blue eyes and if SHE is deaf she has eyes in her butt because I call her with her back turned and she will come.

+/- 40% of white cats with 1 blue eye are deaf

+/- 85% of white cats with 2 blue eyes are deaf

The white gene is autosomal dominant... The deafness is not a simple mendelian trait. It is not sex or X linked. Some 2 blue eyed white cat strains ( selective breeding) may have 100% deafness.

Other strains of 2 blue eyed white cats may have only 50% deafness.

PS: the white is not albinism...
 
hmm... he is actually starting to get faint, slightly different colored stripes on his tail as he gets older... thus not all white. but both eyes are blue. I have been testing it out, and I think maybe he is partially deaf or something...

Perhaps it doesn't consider you a threat and can sense when your around him. So even when you try to scare him, he won't budge.
 
hmm... quite possibly. He doesn't respond when I call him names(like &quot;stupid&quot😉, but that just leads me to believe he has a laid back personality.

And I made another obvious discovery yesterday: he can't be entirely deaf because he likes playing with bells.
