cats are dumb

You're joking, right?

Its always laughable when people make absurd statements like this.

What is absurd about it? Dogs are pack animals and deal with us like any other pack mate once they figure out their place in our "pack". Since we are the pack leaders they want to please us and respond to our training because it is beneficial to them to do so. Cats are solitary hunters but can be trained, it just requires different methods since they are used to dealing with the world as a solitary actor. Studies generally show that dogs and cats are about equal in intelligence overall.

The cat is winning. Part of they reason a cat does the claw move is to place its scent onto something. Now you smell like the cat and have provided hours of warmth.

"while cats own you"

For some strange reason, cat people relish the fact that they truly believe their cat is in charge of their life. Its a strange mindset.

Is it possible that the cat is capable of learning and opts not to follow the lesson? Sure - but regardless of what the cat thinks, it ain't in charge.

my boyfriend's cat wants to lay on my lap. fine. but every time she's laying on me, she starts digging her claws into my stomach.

The cat is attempting to dig it's way to the fetus in your belly in order that it may have a tasty snack. The only solution is to set the animal on fire with gasoline and throw it at your boyfriend because he obviously taught the cat to do that. D: D: D:

Once that task has been accomplished, you may then sell the movie rights for the story to Oprah. 😱

The cat is going to keep doing it until you give up and get used to the pain.

Cats > humans.

I locked the cat in my boyfriend's bedroom. I believe I've won the battle, if not the war 😛

(no, I didn't lock it in the bedroom because of the scratching... there are some contractors working in the hallway and the door is open, so it's staying in the bedroom rather than risking it running outside)

When the cat slits your throat in your sleep he'll have the last laugh.

I've had my cat since he was born. Taught him to do several things including playing fetch like a dog. They can also be trained to use the toilet, but my cat likes water too much for that. I did try training him, but when I leave the lid of the toilet open he likes to jump in. That and drop anything he can pick up in his mouth in the toilet. Bottle caps, my car keys, and a roll of electrical tape are just examples of what I had to fish out of a toilet.

So i stop trying to train him to use the toilet. Oh well.

Turkish Van?

Well that's what I get for assuming. And apparently everyone else did as well with the muffin tangent.

What do you mean everyone? Only 1 person made the muffin tops comment, and they just joined last month so they don't know anybody. Most people who post here know which regular members are male vs. female.

And that's beside the point, because males can produce the same muffin top look. They just usually don't wear tight tops that show it... but many wear too tight of pants.

my boyfriend's cat wants to lay on my lap. fine. but every time she's laying on me, she starts digging her claws into my stomach.

every time she starts digging her claws into me, I pick her up and place her on the floor. after the second instance, my dog would have understood the cause-and-effect nature of what was going on and would have stopped scratching me if he wanted to lay in my lap... this has been going on with this fucking cat for like 18 hours, though :hmm:

I can only draw the conclusion that dogs >>> cats

It is a nursing instinct, most cats do this when they are snuggled up next to the warm body of someone they are fond of.

I've had dogs and cats and much prefer cats. Dogs are too high maintenance.

You're assuming the cats goal is to lay on your lap. Perhaps it just wants to claw you and piss you off, and see how many times you'll let it claw it before you finally have had enough. Cats are devious.

Cats definitely learn cause and effect, but they're patient and don't really mind minor inconveniences. In other words, they'll just keep repeating whatever they want to do unless there's a damn good reason not to do it.

We had a very large cat who never dropped the kneading habit, and he lived to about 18. He and I came to an understanding many years ago. I stopped putting him on the floor when he did it, and he'd stop jumping up and doing it, as long as I had a place next to me that he could lay down. I'd either put a blanket on me or next to me, and he'd lay on that.

Now that I think about it, the cat got what he wanted. I guess he trained me pretty well.

Well, at least the cat means well.

When you pick her up and set her on the floor, she probably thinks you're trying to play with her or something.

<--- lays on my chest and sucks on my shirt when I take naps.

If cats and dogs were people, or rather, if you met someone who acted like a cat and someone who acted like a dog, which would you rather hang out with? The dude who is constantly staring at you, waiting for you to play with him, whimpering when he can't see you, hanging his head out the window of the car like a retard...

Or the cat who is just there to hang out with you. Every once in a while he'll call you up to see what you're doing or see if you want to do something. But he doesn't base his whole life around you.

Have you ever successfully trained a dog not to twitch its' leg when you scratch its' belly? That's akin to trying to train a cat not to knead. Both are simply physiological responses to stimuli.

Last time that happened, I tossed the cat into a wall hard enough to break its face. #WINNING
