I always had cats (and dogs) as a kid and don't remember ever finding hairballs. I don't even recall my cats ever trying to cough one up. I remember reading about cat hairballs and asking my teacher about it because my cats never had those behaviors.

As an adult, I've seen many cats trying to cough-up hairballs, but I still don't think I've ever seen one coughed-up. It would probably be super-easy to pick up, though. Nothing like the kinds of things a dog leaves behind.

Oh. I probably shouldn't have embedded that. :sneaky:

Decided to remove embedded image anyway...
It's more of a long-haired cat issue. My parents long-haired cough's one up about a couple of times a week. It's basically throw up mixed with hair.

Cat owners do get used to the smell of cat piss, I instantly smell it in anybody's house when I first walk in. Nothing can mask it.

In my experience, a regularly cleaned litter box with quality litter won't really smell much at all (unless you're talking about the same room seconds after it was used). Now a wet dog on the other hand, gah.

my cat poops in his litter box, my roommates 3 yappy mutts will DIVE in the box to eat the poop if the cats room door is left open. Sorry, but nothing a cat does is as dirty as a dog scarfing on feline poop.

lmao so true. We have 3 cats and an Old English Bulldog. The second a turd drops he is off the couch trying to get into the litter box for a meal.

Right now we have sick kittens so yes you can 'smell' that, but my mainstay was a herd of 6 cats (we also have 5 or 6 litter boxes hidden around the house that get cleaned at least 2x a day) and most guests actually comment how can we have so many cats without a cat smell. The sad thing is many friends that own cats I can smell that too. I go and look at the box and it's fucking solid with piss and cat crap usually.

I use Feline Pine litter. The solids are easy to remove and the piss turns to sawdust. We use a regular slotted scoop to sift the 'dust' to one side (along with some pellets) and the majority of the pellets to another.

Then we use a noodle scoop and a gallon sized baggie to sift out the dust from the pellets.

The scoop looks like this:

My litter box doesn't smell, but it's cleaned every day. One rather small cat doesn't make a mess if it's properly taken care of.

We've had a cat for ten years. I hate her. But she doesn't smell and isn't particularly dirty. She does piss on stuff she shouldn't, and that's a big problem. However, she only started doing this when we got our first dog, and I recognize it as an act of civil disobedience. So I got another dog. Screw that cat.

Oh, and nobody has mentioned the way they like to stretch by extending their demonic little claws and raking the fabric off of whatever your newest piece of furniture is.
