Well, for some reason the real-time mirror has been corrupted too...

Um, DUH

Any real-time backups will corrupts the copies as well. Real-time only helps with Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery, not Data Integrity. They should have had tape backups or snapshots.

A certain hosing company that for the moment shall remain nameless has destroyed my fiances company! The company - a web based service relying heavily on a database was corrupted. No problem you say? get the backup! Well, for some reason the real-time mirror has been corrupted too...

WTF?

This is 7 months of development and WAY too much money to talk about!

%$#@%%!!!!! :|

You only had one backup? And real-time?

Not even a weekly? I'm sorry, Mwilding, but if it was that important you should've had a few more backups.

Not even one older one?

Edit -- Fiance's company? Sorry, I misread that. I just can't believe any DBA worth his salt would not have multiple backups of critical systems. I've got five backups, one in an off-site location, for our production information.

It's amazing what some developers do. We had a programmer who was developing this new software important for our team, 2 years in the making, and I kept asking him "do you have any backups of that" and he was always like "nope, don't need them". And then one time he almost lost the whole thing because his OS got corrupted.

well, at this point it's all about immediate recovery. that - or there is no company.

Just a thought... but whenever I develop software that is going to be hosted, I work on it on my own machine and then upload changes as I need to. So really I always have 2 copies - the live one and the work in progress. Are you saying they worked on this the whole time right off the host? That is really bad planning... 😕

update #2 - disk is still in the hands of the recovery company - no news there yet.

HOWEVER! It seems that the hosting company may well have failed to provide the level of service that was being paid for. i.e. no mirrored drive... If the recovery center can prove this then the hosting company is going to be held liable.

Are they liable if they state "daily backups" on their website but can't provide them when asked ? I should sue... 😉

Can anyone recommend a Windows based remote backup utility? I know some FTP clients can do scripting/scheduling... is that good enough?

I have 5 layers of backups for my personal data (MP3's, pictures, programs). All are onsite (In my house) but the only way to wipe them all out would be to lose my house (fire etc). So, if I did lose it all I have bigger problems.
5 layers for my PERSONAL stuff. If I had a critical infrastructure, I dont even KNOW how deep I'd be in backups. But it would sure as hell be alot.

Feel for your loss, but without knowing the whole story I wouldnt say the hosting company is fully reliable. Who doesnt keep their own backups?? Course, all depends on the contract I suppose.....

Are you going to tell us the company or not? Unless you think you will be sued for libel/slander on a messageboard, you have nothing to worry about.

"Credit:
In the event of a service outage exceeding one (1) hour, credit will be issued to the customer for twenty five (25) times the actual downtime exceeding the allowance. Credit will be calculated based on the customer?s current monthly lease rate, and will not exceed one (1) full month of credit, using the formula: total minutes outage, divided by the total monthly lease rate (in cost per minute), times twenty five (25)."

You will probably only get credited in the end... their policy sux ass.
