A certain hosing company that for the moment shall remain nameless has destroyed my fiances company! The company - a web based service relying heavily on a database was corrupted. No problem you say? get the backup! Well, for some reason the real-time mirror has been corrupted too...

WTF?

This is 7 months of development and WAY too much money to talk about!

*update* this drives are being delivered to a data recovery center tomorrow at 8am - fingers crossed!

**update #2**disk is still in the hands of the recovery company - no news there yet.

HOWEVER! It seems that the hosting company may well have failed to provide the level of service that was being paid for. i.e. no mirrored drive... If the recovery center can prove this then the hosting company is going to be held liable.
 
They don't have any offline backups? Tapes, CD-Rs ? That is bad business for the hosting company and your fiance.

Bingo. They should always have offsite backups. If they do not, then perhaps they do not deserve to be in business. (Coldhearted towards your fiance, perhaps, but from a business standpoint, would YOU trust valuable data with someone who can't back it up properly?)

You only had one backup? And real-time?

Not even a weekly? I'm sorry, Mwilding, but if it was that important you should've had a few more backups.

Not even one older one?

Edit -- Fiance's company? Sorry, I misread that. I just can't believe any DBA worth his salt would not have multiple backups of critical systems. I've got five backups, one in an off-site location, for our production information.

Check the hosting contract. There is sure to be a clause in there that the customer is responsible for the data in the end.

Depends on the service level agreement they came up with when they used this company. Was it set up for disaster recovery with the assumption that the hosting company would be ultimately responsible? Do they have that in writing?

It all depends on what you have on paper. Especially if it's going to be expensive...
 
You don't know how to back up your own databases? No matter what you expect out of a hosting company, if the data is truly critical it's your responsibility to make sure it's safe. It takes 2 minutes to write a script that'll back up all your data on a weekly basis.

Whatever happened to solid state backups?
 
Mirroring and backups serve different purposes. It constantly amazes me how many IT folks think that mirroring the data obviates the need for backups.

Mirroring doesn't protect you from "del *.*" Files will be deleted from both members of the mirror.

I truly feel for you. I know how awful it is to loose valuable data. But in the end, your fiance is responsible for not making backups (unless your hosting company was contracted to do the backups).

It really is inexcusable to be developing without a change control system in place that allows you to revert to previous versions of files and databases.

Perhaps your fiance has business insurance that might pay for the data recovery? (I'm stretching here, but it's about the only option you have.)

Regardless of what happens, if the company can be saved, BACK UP ABSOLUTELY EVER FING THING. Once you get in the routine, or get a nice script working for a while, then you can pick and choose what to backup, as some stuff can be backed up less-frequently
 
My webhost promotes backups but when my account got hacked, I asked for them... they only could provide backup from 6 months prior. Lying bastids. Always do your own backups via FTP. At the minimum, weekly. ¬
 
I hate to say it, because I know its the last thing you want to hear, but if its THAT important, your fiance is absolutely nuts for not making CERTAIN its protected.

There is no excuse for not backing stuff up.

I tried to explain this at my last job. If you want to be lazy, or cheap. DONT expect to keep your data. It's just not going to happen.
 
my hosting has daily backups, plus i keep my own copies of the backups, PLUS i always keep a current version in a folder on my hard drive.
