alright, fresh xp install, newly dl'd (5.1) nforce drivers (uda, not nf4), then i went to install catalysts. they installed fine, but on the next reboot, it posted, checked for sata stuff, checked cmos, started booting, the normal, but after the xp logo bootscreen, screen turned black (not normal blank screen, no signal black), then it showed a SEVERLY artifacted shutdown screen. this is repeatable and i have to go to eitehr safe mode or last known good settings to get it to boot. the video card tests out ok, mobo/ram/cpu is fine, so is the other stuff. i tried two xp cds (and formats of the partition each time, and not quick formats either), 3.3 and 5.1 version nforce2 drivers, and four catalyst versions. any ideas? o, and i flashed my bios a few times to rule that out too, dropped cpu speed to 900mhz just to rule out any possibility of an oc causing it, but its just not letting me install the dammned drivers

that's pretty strange... when you changed your BIOS, did you check to ensure all of your settings were correct? ie. 4x/8x, etc.

also what type of videocard? thx

Which Catalyst driver are you trying to use? The 5.4 version is the latest - and that comes in two flavors - old reliable and the newer Catalyst Control Center. The latter can cause problems unless you have XP SP2 installed as well as .NET Framework.

The driver, however, is exactly the same - the other stuff mentioned just sits on top of the driver.

Partly correct as long as you are talking about the same version - but different versions often have different drivers.
