You didn;t say what is actually wrong...

This is what you do:

1. Go to C:/ATI/setup.exe start it and click uninstalll when prompted, this will start the uninstaller, it will then ask you to restart- do so.
2. upon entering windows, run Driver Sweeper for ATI then restart your computer again (some files are still in use so it's better to restart here)
3. Upon entering windows again install the new driver set you have just downloaded. done.

Never had any problems updating Catalysts every month for the last like 4 years.

did that, didn't work. It said, "FAIL" when it tried to install the driver in the log. It would be like, "Install success(See log)." I viewed log and it said under like... Installed driver: FAIL

I was like, "GREAAAAATT" then it didn't recognize the cards.. bad screen res... So I had to format. 🙁

I've been installing right ontop of the old drivers without removing them for a while now without 1 problem. this on windows 7 RC tho.

Never had a problem installing on top of the old driver, the catalyst installer uninstalls the old driver for you anyways.

I used to do the uninstall, reboot, install, reboot thing, but you don't really have to anymore.

Vista 64bit running on my folk's computer for more than 2 years now. The machine had a Radeon X1950XTX which I recently switched to a HD3450 (as they're not gaming anyway) - I just pulled the old card, put in the new one - don't recall a hick up at all with the drivers... Once I had a Catalyst error after installing new drivers that broke CCC - a small google search showed what needs to be done to resolve the problem (some registry editing) - reinstalled the driver, worked like a charm. Still does 🙂

Stopped using a driver sweeper a long time ago too. I don't even bother with restarts of the OS - I find it strange if I have to do it after any installation (reminds me of Win98SE 😛 ). On Win7 RC 64bit right now (waiting for my Home Premium to ship from Amazon 🙂), rig running for weeks without a single restart (unless there's an update that requires it of course). I don't recall having any problems too under Win7 (same for Vista on this machine before Win7). Swapped my HD4870 for a HD4350 not long ago - I think only one reboot was required (when switching the card). But I will need a reinstall shortly, to go from RC to Retail (as I'm running Ultimate RC and ordered Home Premium - can't upgrade even with some editing tricks - unless someone knows a way?).

Reinstalling your OS twice a year...? 😕 What are you doing to your computer that kills everything so effectively? Unless you're doing something on purpose (and you really have to try btw) or there's really something wrong with your hardware, I can't imagine how it is possible to go through OS installs that frequently... It almost looks like you're really enjoying the reinstalls and are doing everything so that the new one is as soon as possible 😛

It's important that you enter windows in safe mode because otherwise windows will automatically retrieve a backup version of catalyst (most likely the faulty one) on startup because you uninstalled the graphics drivers, making windows think that it needs to autodetect a preexisting version.

So you have to restart into safe mode, run driver sweeper and clear out all the ATI backup files with driver sweeper so that your computer doesn't automatically sniff them out upon next reboot. I've had the exact same problem in the past and this worked out for me, hope it does for you too.

I format when I feel the need to. Sometimes it might be six months between, or it might be two years. Crazy? Maybe. But I don't obsess about it.

I know I ran into the problem with the Code43 bug and several oc the Cat versions from 8.12 all the way to 9.2. Maybe you should try installing a different version of CAT first, then if that works try upgrading to 9.9 again.

I have 9.9 working now because I formatted... It's all over now, but I did everything right and it still didn't work. ATI makes shitty driver packages. It's FACT. It's been this way ever since 8.6.

Why do people format so often? One of the comps I have up and running right now hasn't been formatted for 8 years and doesn't have any issues(including mobo swaps which I did while updating the OS), what the hell are you people doing to your systems?

If your system is at the point where it needs a format after a few months you are doing something horribly wrong.

I had to reformat after 3 years. Did something horribly wrong with unlocker assistant ( I think). I do have to use drivercleaner every so often.

I reformat or do a clean sweep of the system periodically because there's alot of residue from uninstalled software or even background software that you either forgot about or didn't know you had installed. All of that slows a system down over time, and I am often surprised at how much snappier a new system is after a while of not using one. This is disregarding of system specs as it's not really a hardware issue.

I'm reposting a post here that I posted to the Resident Evil 5 thread earlier but didn't get much attention.

Just ran the RE5 benchmark again with the Cat 9.9 drivers. MASSIVE IMPROVEMENT.

Here's my original post, IIRC I did not have Vsync enabled, but otherwise the settings are pretty much the same.

I'm noticing alot of micro stutter and flickering in certain parts of the benchmark on my 4870X2. Is anyone with a similar rig getting the same issue?

First off, the ATI flickering and microstuttering issue with DX10 is completely gone. That alone would've sold me, but the numbers themselves have also went up. It's also worth noting that my CPU for the previous bench was running at 2.66 GHz, but when I ran the 9.9 benchmarks I actually had it clocked lower (2.16GHz) for power savings. This really goes to show the improvement in the graphics drivers.

Settings: 1920X1200, 8XAA, DX10 with all options on high with motion blur

no Vsync: 127.3/79.5/54.0/76.7 with 80.5fps overall
With Vsync: 59.9/59.9/53.7/59.9 with 54fps overall
no Vsync no AA: 143.2/79.1/73.5/81.2 with 89.3 fps overall

Strange is the third part of the variable bench, which ran like shit on previous versions of catalyst, namely 9.2, 9.6 and 9.7 (I skipped 9.8). Now it never dipped below 50fps with or without Vsync and with 8xAA on. Whatever ATI's driver team did, they came through for us end users. Kudos to them! AA performance has been drastically improved, within batting distance of non-AA performance

It's notable that while without vsync the game could run higher than 60fps I could notice alot more screen tearing, which Vsync does a good job of eliminating.

I have never understood this either. I have years in between installs. And my systems are just as fast as day one, usually the hardware goes out or is updated before the operating system. I just don't get it. 😕

2 years ago I took an athlon 3200+ hp rig, swiped the hard drive, gpu and cpu and otherwise rebuilt it from the ground up (including new case) and didn't have to do a format. If you are formatting every 6 mos or so then you need to stop downloading things that you don't understand.

I use to be a believer in using DriveSweeper, but not anymore. It ultimately started causing more problems than it is was worth. I now like others suggested just install on top of the old (using Windows 7). Has worked much better for me.

for anyone crunching milkyway@home... the 9.9 cats have been much more reliable/stable than the 9.8 cats on vista64.... i don't have to reset boinc as often... with the 9.8 cats, i had to reset every few hours... with the 9.9 cats, i might have to reset boinc maybe once a day (but i haven't reset boinc since sunday and they're still going strong)... that's a huge improvement for me.
