Yes it is from our beloved friends The Inq and Fud but it at least provides some pretty slides and an overview of whats happening.

ATI today is announcing its new Stream transcoding paradigm, and unlike some others, it makes quite a bit of sense. Stream now parses workloads between the CPU and the GPU, and does things much more intelligently.

The runtime promises quicker video transcoding with lower CPU usage. AMD Technical Manager Ab Nacef told us two new features in particular make that possible: fast UVD decoding and GPU-based resolution scaling. The Universal Video Decoder has been around in Radeon graphics cards for a while, and it normally offloads high-definition video decoding for real-time playback. For the new runtime, AMD "unlocked" the video processor to enable non-real-time decoding. As for resolution scaling, Nacef says doing that on the GPU saves a lot of memory bandwidth.

This should mean many a great thing for Avivo, but the company plans to help its partners in integrating the transcoding engine in their apps, such as CyberLink?s MediaShow Espresso, PowerDirector 7, ArcSoft SimHD, etc. The company?s representative said how there are many more, but he wasn?t eager to provide names just yet.

In short, no.

It's really for media encoding and playback from what I can see. Similar to Elemental's Badaboom software for nVidia cards.

I've tried it with Cyberlink PowerDirector 7, and it cuts my H.264 convert time in half. I got a profiles made just for this, 4870 @ 800/200Mhz, which keeps my GPU at 50c @ 21 fan speed while it's encoding.

I also tried MediaShow Espresso trial, but there's no control over the bitrate.

I tried the AVIVO on Vista 64 and is considerably faster than when I used AVIVO on Vista 32. I found that it doesn't suck up CPU power at all like the previous AVIVO, and it no longer crash when you cancel the video encoding process. NICE!

Here is a review of Cyberlink MediaShow Espresso GPGPU Performance comparing the 4770, 9800GTX+ with slower Dual core Athlon X2's and the high end Core i7. The results are quite indicative of where AMD and Nvidia have gone with this. When utilizing a slower CPU transcoding into common formats the 4770 is consistently faster than the 9800GTX+ and CPU alone. When the system is changed to a Core i7, the 9800GTX+ is consistently faster than the 4770 and CPU alone. This is due to Nvidia offloading more onto the CPU than the 4770 does and this is beneficial when you have a high end CPU but with a low end CPU it is better to use a 4770.

Hotfixes usually include all language packs and other things like Hydravision in one file hence the larger file size.
