Catalyst 8.3 Preview

There is also a new GPU scaling feature coming with Catalyst v8.3. This new feature gives users the ability to use GPU accelerated scaling for wide aspect LCD displays, instead of allowing the panel to scale images from non-native resolutions. There is also a new setting labeled ?Maintain aspect ratio? that improves the display resolution image quality, when GPU scaling is enabled, by maintaining the wide panel aspect ratio.

Current drivers already use the GPU to do the scaling. What's new is that you can now choose whether you want the GPU or the LCD to do the scaling. And the new aspect option is to maintain the AR of the original image while scaling, not to "maintain the wide panel aspect ratio" (whatever that's supposed to mean). And the options are not only for widescreen displays either.

Anyway, was about time they finally fixed it, users have only been complaining for about, uh, 5 years.

mmm... nvidia had the option to select "maintain aspect ratio" and to choose between monitor or video card scaling in forever... part of the reason I bought an nvidia over an AMD was because that was such an important issue to me, and its all drivers.

With maintain aspect ratio I Can play older games on my wide screen with black bars instead of distorted graphics.
The way it is meant to be!

I don't think the driver you linked to is Cat 8.4... I'm currently looking at the driver versions in the CCC and there are two different values:

Driver Packaging Version 8.453-080122a-059347C-ATI
Catalyst® Version 08.2

As you can see, I'm running Cat 8.2... My guess is that the 8.47 that you're referring to is the Driver Packaging Version (whatever that is) on some beta drivers. I got a cd with my card that says 8.4xx on it too, but I doubt that a cd pressed and packaged with a video card is going to be newer than the latest Cats on ATI's site.

they are betas from FEB 21rst. Compare the 8.0, 8.3 and 8.471 options.

Well, with AMD drivers now having them, nvidia no longer holds that advantage, and everyone can play old games without distortion.

It scales really well in CoD4 :Q

Single 3870 gets 25.8fps, three of them get 77.38 fps. That's a 99% performance increase for each card you add.
