catalyst 11.5 released with new and improved controllpanel plus 11.5a hotfix

The moment the display drivers were installed, fan on my card ramped up to 35%. I have a curve set up in Afterburner, keeps the card under 60C at idle (which means the fan runs at like 23% = very quiet). Though after a reboot everything went back to normal, ran a few games and it's all good.

Because no one really cares about the 5 series... 6th seriesis here and series 7 is already on the horizon...

I still have a 4th series card in my 2nd comp, so not flaming, just stating reality.

For those using an AMD card in their HTPCs the 11.5a hotfix FINALLY fixes the mute bug where muting sound within 7MC would crash the driver and require a reboot. It's been nearly a year since this bug has been around. 'bout damn time.

That's not true, as of now far more people have 5 series radeons than the "new" 68XX VLIW5 GPUs. Only VLIW4 is a really new design. The whole situation just reeks of planned obsolescence. The sad thing is that their competitor has even worse business practices.
 
I just ordered a 5770 because it's inexpensive, relatively powerful, and DirectX 11 capable. The 5000 series will likely stay on the market for a while as the least expensive way to get a DirectX 11 card.
 
I'm not sure if there is much left to extract performance wise for 4 and 5 series cards? If AMD is up to the r&d validation and such, then whatever lower-mid 6 series optimizations they make, could trickle down to the 5 series.

I doubt AMD, or anyone else, has the resources to pour into performance enhancements for product that is EOL. It's a lot of work keeping the current product operating at it's peak.

As for the claim that was put forth that they actually sabotage their older equipment with inferior performance on newer driver releases to accelerate it's obsolescence, we'd need some proof of that. They'll sometimes have driver releases that reduce performance a bit on their current models as well. I'm assuming it's for the good of the overall performance and bug squashing.

I personally don't understand the perceived need for new drivers every month. It's nice that AMD offers this (They actually offer more than that, but it's one certified driver per month.), and if there's a particular performance issue that gets fixed, then great. If your equipment is working fine though and the next drivers don't have anything to offer for you, what's the drama? If I install a new driver that breaks something, I roll back to the previous driver, and do a bug ticket. Wait for the next one and if it's still there tell them again. In the meantime, if I have to use the same driver for 3mos. no big deal really.
 
Any one remember the good ol days when you had 1 ond only 1 driver come on a floppy with your new chunk of metal; and you used that driver for the next several years?

Mostly because game developers suck at writing code to a standard, and next month's games tend to have an alarmingly high probability of not working properly with an unhappily high percentage of graphics chips.

Well, my point is that with updates coming so often a driver or two that aren't perfectly compatible with someone's setup isn't a major malfunction. nVidia's is quarterly, I believe. Even then, if a previous release worked, no drama if the newest doesn't. Just wait for the next one.
 
Hmm. Got a new 5770 today, but the 11.5 drivers refused to play nice with it. Gave me a couple blue screen crashes. The 11.4 drivers strangely would not appear for download, so I ended up downloading and installing the 11.3 drivers, which have worked fine so far.
 
So does the official 11.5 have everything 11.5a hotfix have?
I just want to know which one offers best performance?
I have a 6850 with driver 11.1... im guessing i need to update

If you're not having problems, then you don't need to update.



11.5 for me because I just moved to SB and Xfire 6950s. So far everything has been stable.

Looks like the strange upset win from last month, in which the 6870 somehow mysteriously surpassed the 5870 in most tests, has been righted. The 6870 is down, the 5870 is up. Cough it up to testing error or perhaps optimizations that were backed out. Who knows...obviously neither should be losing performance, but when the 6870 gained and the 5870 lost big last month, it was suspicious.

Strange, I am using a 5770 with 11.5.. and its working perfectly fine.

The differences are minimal. Within margin of error, IMO. I wouldn't think it was anything suspicious. Maybe I'm not the suspicious type though. 🙂
 
Tried 11.5 via catalyst automatic update. had system crash and hard reboot during driver installation. windows booted with stock windows driver, not old radeon driver. reinstalled 11.4 had no issues. It may be the auto updater rather than the driver error though...
 
I had the auto updater crash CCC and I had to just uninstall and then install 11.5. Seems to work OK now. I disabled the auto updater and will just manually check from now on. It's not that big a deal any way.
