Ichinisan and I added another 13 games to our NES collection today so I thought I'd start cataloging someplace where we can always reference it. What better place than here?

What are the numbers for? Also, who has who?

The duplicates I've been getting are going to my sisters. Today, the duplicates they get are Zelda 2 Gold, Tetris, and TMNT 1.

-[total of section]-[running total]

I split it up to make it easier to edit on mobile devices and did that to make it easier to fix/verify totals. So far there are 148 unique game paks/cart titles... if you count the official NES Cleaning Kit.

Not sure if you noticed but we acquired Super Mario Bros. 2. :) I think we added over 11 games that day thanks to the $3 bin. Could've got SMB2 for $9 but I paid $12 (working on a different deal with that seller and I'm trying to develop some goodwill). Unfortunately we didn't see the titles you were looking for. :(

That's OK, thanks! I'm slowly collecting myself. I'm trying to move the TV into another room to connect the NES, but it's 85 lbs - not easy to wield by myself, lol.

Today, I have 2 games coming.
1) NES Playaction Football
2) River City Ransom

I wonder if there is an application to help us catalog our collections, similar to blurays.

Added the following from a local indie game shop:
Solstice: The Quest for the Staff of Demnos

Ikari Warriors II: Victory Road

Jeopardy! (with manual)

Tecmo Baseball

Also, Ichinisan reminded me that we loaned our copy of Contra to a coworker so it didn't make the list before.

The other Contra games are fairly expensive on ebay. I have yet to get Contra 1.

If there is not a program that documents NES game collections online I can likely make a simple website for that. The question is, where is the documented list of all NES games ever created.

Is Ikara Warriors similar to Guerilla War? I used to rent Guerilla War all the time. It's amazing how many NES games I rented and the NES still worked, its 72pin must have been gunked to all hell and back.

Dad had an Atari 2600 at the time, I remember chewing the leather off the stick (I was 1 or 2). I wonder why he threw those consoles out, we used to have like 50 games for it.

I remember I but a Jack the Ripper skateboard game, and Dad made me return it (saying I didn't know who jack the ripper was).

There are a lot of collection manager apps but all the free ones I find for iOS have serious issues that keep me from using them. There are more than a few websites as well, but I want something I can point my phone camera at and take a snapshot with notes for every entry and filter titles in real time as I type letters from anywhere in the title. It seems to me like a spreadsheet is the best way for now.

There are some spreadsheets and checklists online but I haven't succeeded at getting any to open on my phone in a way where I can edit them. I do have a list in my notes app that was almost entirely typed by hand due to terrible formatting of copied and pasted PDF titles.

Edit: Wow! I tried to paste the list but Tapatalk errors out and tells me that the message is "too short!"

Edit2: I was able to post the list using web view but I moved it to a dedicated post and edited out the games I have (shortened it).

Moving the list of missing titles I intend to find/obtain to this post. These are the ?? titles I would want to add to consider myself "done" if I'm not going to continue trying for a full set. Each game in this list is one which:

I've owned or played before or
I always wanted to play or
I knew someone who owned or enjoyed it or
is generally considered an NES classic (specifically, the NES version) or
was published by Nintendo or
supports a special accessory (Power Glove, Four Score, etc) or
I already have boxes of manuals for or
completes a series containing another game which fits those characteristics.

  • Adventure Island III
  • Adventures of Gilligan's Island, The
  • Adventures of Lolo II , The

  • Bases Loaded IV
  • Batman Returns
  • Battletoads & Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team
  • Boulder Dash

  • Clu Clu Land

  • Day Dreamin' Davey
  • Donkey Kong Jr. Math
  • Dragon Warrior IV

  • Fist of the North Star

  • Super Pitfall
  • Superman

  • Tiny Toon Adventures Cartoon Workshop
  • Twin Cobra

  • Wario's Woods
  • Wizardry II: Knight of Diamonds
  • Wizards & Warriors III
  • World Champ

I already plan to get the Japanese-exclusives "Sweet Home," "Mr. Gimmick," "Lagrange Point," and "Holy Diver" to load translated ROMs onto and I'm already considering doing the same for Dragon Warrior II and IV (substitute translated Dragon Quest), so I might as well BOLO for alternate-region copies or reproductions of these that I have no intention of paying original US prices for:

  • Bubble Bobble: Part 2
  • Bucky O'Hare
  • Bomberman II
  • Bonk's Adventure
  • Chip 'N Dale: Rescue Rangers 2
  • Color a Dinosaur

I remember renting Life Force and enjoying it, but never beating it. I really like how NES was based on essentially no input lag at all, nowadays lag -code is built into everything to account for TV delay, network play, etc. - can't depend on 0ms input response.

Well, technically the controllers could have been designed without the 4021 shift register encoder chip to shave off a few more cycles but silicon was cheaper than adding more wires:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKqDVi_JcOg

Luckily, it's a standard off-the-shelf part, which really came in useful recently when I found a dead one in a broken NES dogbone controller. Once I narrowed it down to the dead 4021 by swapping known-good parts, I ordered a pack of three from China and fixed it for good.

This just seems like vain boasting.

If what you wanted to do was actually track games between the TWO of you, a shared document on any cloud storage service would have sufficed.

But no, there should be a topic on a public forum that's mostly just you multi-posting. Seems great.

You do realize that few collectors collect just to keep it to themselves, right? Would you rather I started ANOTHER stupid YouTube channel? There are tons of collectors uploading new videos with each new addition and I don't want to add to that noise. This works for me.

Part of the problem is that a lot of this is done at a flea market where there is no cellular signal. I have a plain-text offline copy of the OP and the buy list which I routinely update before going offline. What I really need is a printout of all the pricecharting prices before I go offline. :(

Why does it have to be "between the TWO of" us? The part about "where I can reference it" is important. It's a public link I can give to someone else random when we are working out trades. I don't want some cloud service with some required app or a downloadable text file or spreadsheet that some phones wouldn't know what to do with. I don't have to sign up for web-hosting or friend them on Facebook or invite them to a Facebook group.

Speaking of Facebook groups, being "on a public forum" doesn't mean we can't socialize and look for others similarly excited about certain subjects. Your primary complaint stems from the misconception that social posts don't belong on public forums.

Facebook groups don't seem to work nearly as well for collection-tracking/updates. They are chiefly local which drastically limits those interested in participation. I already got a suggestion I would not have had on my buy list if it weren't for this thread. My Zelda II thread was social and that legitimately helped me in ways that would have been ruined if I just looked up an online FAQ or walk-through.

If multi-posting annoys you, how do you feel about thread-crapping? The only reason you see so many posts in a row up there is because the nature of the content, which someone asked for (participation, remember?), required me to break up a single post and integrate it into four. Tapatalk glitches and won't let me edit posts with long lists in code tags so I had to turn a "Complete" list into a reply with "Have," "Want," and "Remainder" lists. The extra posts would have been integrated into replies or updates otherwise with plenty of back and forth. Even if you don't consider all of those a reply to him at least I responded in a way that undeniably added some utility to my list while skirting Tapatalk's glitches.

Now: You clicked the thread so I assume you had SOME interest. How familiar are you with the NES library? Do you have any suggestions that should be in my "buy" list?

This is fascinating. Are you and Ichinisan brothers? A married couple? Who owns who? Who gets to keep the stuff if one of you moves away?

Figured out that I already owned Romance of the Three Kingdoms and a few different R.B.I. Baseball games when identifying the Famicom games we got in a lot last year. Added!

Also moved a few more titles I recall playing to my "buy" list.

We are twins. We each have our own apartments so we end up shuttling the Nintendo/Famicom Twin/Super Famicom back and forth several times a month. The bulk of our collection (the stuff we don't play frequently) stays in a 16x16x16 building that was built as a game room at our mother's place.

I originally posted these here when it was under construction back in 2004:

Just like when we were kids and we only had one game: it all belongs to both of us. We couldn't afford the hobby otherwise! When I went to San Diego for four years I took the Wii and PS3 but the collection stayed there.

Added the US version of Arkanoid and paid way too much so I can experiment with fixing a broken NES Arkanoid Vaus controller or adapting a Famicom Arkanoid Vaus controller. Doesn't increase the count since it's technically a dupe, but I couldn't resist adding 4 others:
Ikari Warriors (reminds me that I still need Ikari Warriors III)
Star Voyager (different vendor was charging more a week ago)
Karate Champ (reminds me that I still need The Karate Kid)
Rocket Ranger (reminds me that I still need The Rocketeer)

Recently did an SNES dupe check which led to me adding Aero the Acrobat and The Rocketeer so I should probably start tracking changes in that library too.

The original PC/XT keyboard did the same thing.

74LS322 1 in 8 out shift register with sign extend.

The 8 bit parallel output went to port A of the 8255 PPI that you read at 60h, the clear/reset lines went to some bits in port B of the 8255 @ 61h, but the magic is that the sign extend of the 74LS322 pushes a bit out the end into a single 74LS74 flip flop whose output drives pin 19 of the 8259 PIC for INT1.

They keyboard sends 9 bit bytes with a start bit such that on the 9th shift the start bit is pushed out into the 74LS74 once the last bit of the scancode is shifted in, which triggers INT1.

The interrupt routine installed by the BIOS reads the byte at the shift register presented by the 8255 @ 60h, translates/stores it in the BIOS data area keyboard buffer, toggles the shift register and flip flop clear/reset presented as bits in 8255 @ 61h, acknowledges and clears the interrupt, and the process repeats.

It's so simple it's genius.

I'm on a massive hardware kick right now.

Going to build me one of these:

http://www.mtmscientific.com/pc-retro.html

Then experiment with connecting a Cyclone II FPGA to the ISA slot and try making my own console style VDP (tile based multi layer scrolling, sprites, etc) for the PC.

There's not reason with a 4.77 MHz 16 bit CPU with an 8 bit bus @ 1.19 MB/s can't do SNES+ quality graphics. Consoles had a huge advantage with 2D hardware acceleration for over a decade.

Hell even most other PCs had some form of hardware sprites or BITBLT or something.

My only memory of Ikari Warriors was that a friend brought it over once when we were kids and it was great fun beating it with two players. The label even promotes that with something like "Two can play together!" on the front. I recall that it either had arcade-style unlimited continues or it was very generous with them which is why we were able to just keep going. I think the ending had a sort of cinematic with an airplane and the president's daughter or something.

Edit: Looks like that was Ikari Warriors III: The Rescue, which is the only one I still don't have. :(

Alright, Woz, you've convinced me. *shove aside* Now you let me do the talking. ;)

I have been thinking about asking my friend to search his dad's shed for his old PC XT so I can poke around but never thought about making a clone. I guess it'd just be too easy to pick up an old one with the floppy drives and input and everything good to go. :D

Added 14 games:
Kings of the Beach
Kung Fu Heroes (dupe)
Life Force (AKA "Salamander;" thanks, Fallen Kell)
Lode Runner
Mach Rider
Mega Man 3
NES Open Tournament Golf
Rescue The Embassy Mission (with manual)
Rush'n Attack (AKA "Green Beret")
Target: Renegade
Tetris 2
Top Players' Tennis, Chris Evert & Ivan Lendl
World Games
Wrath of the Black Manta

I finally decided to cough up for something on my buy list that was on eBay and another in a local shop that was almost $30 (Mega Man 3), which was the most I've spent on an individual game so far. I'm not looking forward to paying what Mega Man and Mega Man 5 are worth but I might as well get what I can out of the way.

5 of these were from eBay marking my first attempt to collect stuff I haven't found locally. One doesn't count because it's a dupe.

Yeah. I played a little bit of Guerrilla War last month and thought it was great!

Added:
Two copies of Al Unser's Turbo Racing but one is in such bad shape that it's almost unrecognizeable. They were both $1 and, well, I can't turn down any NES game for $1. :D That's worth it just for the cart shell and especially with a PCB that I can make it into a Zelda II hack. :awe:

The same guy didn't even bother to clean off the grease spatter from a nearly-ruined copy of RoboCop... or whatever this waxy substance is. It doesn't feel greasy (but it's very old) and when you scrape it off the plastic is horribly blistered and discolored underneath. If it wasn't from hot grease then it's gotta be some kind of chemical reaction so I'll be washing my hands after handling it until it's cleaned off. It's obviously not useful for reusing the cart shell but, hey, it works and I didn't have RoboCop. $1 well spent?

More from the same guy:
-A terrible copy of RoadBlasters with only the remnants of a label. Same deal: $1. It works. I didn't already have it.
-Defender of the Crown with strange label damage, strange discoloration, a black edge on the PCB, and a back label that looks like it was burned off.
-The Rocketeer with a portion of the cart shell missing.
All worked. I considered buying his copy of Metal Gear but it is in a Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt shell with cracks and holes, a torn label, permanant marker including a giant "X" over the old label and "Medal Gear" (sic) written on the front, but I already have Metal Gear. At least they spelled it right on the back... with more permanent marker.

Out of the 35+ games I tested for the first time, the ONE GAME that didn't work was a minty copy of Pin-Bot. I opened it to confirm it looks good inside and out and it was clean. Looked as good as new, but it still doesn't work. I tested it hundreds of times in three perfectly-working consoles (original connector, replacement connector, top-loader) with multiple PSUs and it is dead as a door-nail. Always a blank screen with no graphics or sound, not even once did I see a garbled graphic. The CIC lockout chip seems to work because I can get it to flash or not flash, so that's definitely not it.

I paid $2 extra for the boxed copy of Golf Power ft. Greg Norman because I thought I'd get a manual too. I didn't. I couldn't check because it was behind the glass and I didn't ask because I was buying so many games that such questions would have pushed us way past closing. At least it came with a dust cover. They really should note these things where they aren't available to inspect!

Lesson learned but I did it again deliberately at the very next place. They had a ratty boxed copy The Three Stooges and, once again, I paid about $2 over the typical loose price for the box and dust sleeve with no manual. That's because this one was on my "get" list and I hadn't seen it elsewhere at or below the loose price. When I tested it I thought I got stuck with a board swap because it starts up with a Ghostbusters II title screen and then The Stooges come on screen and on converse about being "in the wrong game." By that point I was already reaching for my list to see if Ghostbusters II was a more or less valuable game, so they got me good! David Fincher's Fight Club Blu-Ray fake-out is less original than I thought. :D

I FINALLY got a copy of Fester's Quest for a price I was willing to pay. For a super-common game there was no way I was paying the inflated local prices I was seeing for this game even though it's one I genuinely want to revisit. It was only going for a few dollars more but I wasn't about to pay more just to end up with a dupe from a near-future lot purchase. Their $8 asking price is almost twice as much as it is worth! Strangely, I bought it for $3 at an alt location for one of those places that was charging too much. Now I know that I have to check both places before committing. More work. :(

On my quest to pick up all the Power Pad games, I added Short Order/Eggsplode... or Eggsplode/Short Order depending on what part of the label you choose to read. Never knew it existed back in the day but it looks like it was published by Nintendo so... *shrug* I would've bought it either way.

I restored my empty Tecmo Super Bowl by buying a replacement Tecmo Super Bowl game pak. If the guy who borrowed my original ever returns it then I guess I'll have a $15 dupe.

I couldn't decide between Little League Baseball Major League Baseball, so I bought both. ;) They were cheap.

Getting Cobra Command is twisting the knife in the hole that is Cobra Triangle. I keep accidentally checking off CT and operating like I finally got it before realizing and having to correct it. List management is getting tedious.

I bought an eBay lot to get a deal on Toki, an uncommon title, but that resulted in more dupes including some I had just bought locally only hours earlier: Tetris 2, Top Gun, and Wrath of the Black Manta. Ouch! At least The Uncanny X-Men and Urban Champion make up for it.

Urban Champion is one of the early "black box" games that always features pixel-inspired art on a black box. My only prior experience with Urban Champion was the version released on eReader cards for the Game Boy Advance. It was the same game running in an NES emulator but, IIRC, people extracted the ROM (LOL! ...from paper!) and determined that it had been changed to a different memory mapper. The eReader's built-in NES emulator probably didn't support emulating whatever memory mapper scheme the original version used. They didn't bother to emulate the more complicated mapper chips since most of those ROMs would need to be printed on far more than the pack of 5 cards NES eReader games had to fit on.

The only other black box game I added was Pinball featuring Mario. I strongly considered adding Volleyball but it just wasn't priced right.

I might've over-paid for Eliminator Boat Duel and Heavy Shreddin'. The prices looked good when compared to the value I had printed up but I forgot that AVGN had recently talked about these. Often their online value might get a temporary spike that makes these slow-to-change retail prices look good in comparison. I know Heavy Shreddin' was cheaper than another place in town so it's probably not too bad.

I also bought another CIB Family Computer copy of Arkanoid for some research I've been doing on the controller. It was a US seller and the controller alone was worth the price. This makes three now: Two Nintendo Family Computer, one Nintendo Entertainment System.

The rest:
Adventures of Dino-Ricky
Barbie
Baseball Simulator 1.000
Beetlejuice
Built to Win, Formula One
California Games
The Chessmaster
Code Name Viper
Cyberball
Ferrari Grand Prix Challenge
Golf Grand Slam
High Speed
Pictionary The Game of Video Quick Draw
Racket Attack
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
RoboWarrior
Roger Clemens' MVP Baseball
Rollerball
Roundball 2-on-2 Challenge
Sesame Street Countdown
Side Pocket
Sky Shark
Star Force
Tecmo NBA Basketball
Wayne Gretzky Hockey

I still might be forgetting some. I'll be lost in editing for a little while.

Target Renegade is tough. I liked Renegade so much better. I was stupid with my NES games and threw them all away years ago. Did that with a lot of PC games too. ....but then I kept my Sega Genesis/CD and it's games, makes sense huh.
I would've had Renegade to mention in that same post but eBay glitched and it went to someone else for less than I was willing to pay. :(

I typed in my bid, moused-over the dialog with a tap-to-click touchpad and it just disappeared. I didn't tap but if it thought I did I couldn't just bid again without checking to see if my old bid went through. That proved easier said than done and the crucial last 30 seconds evaporated. I realized later that it was an eBay glitch because it happened three more times on other lots from the same seller. A different glitch made me lose even more, but this was a mobile app glitch: the seller's list of auctions would sort by ending soonest until you look at one and then go back. While you think you are waiting for the next one to end (they are spaced a few minutes apart) others are ending left and right. I has a sad.
