Cat5e VS Cat6

CAT6 can be used in Higher speed Networks, so in a sense it is better.

The selection should not depend on "better" but on your needs.

If you Network works as regular 100MB/sec. and you need few cables, you would not benefit any thing from a better CAT6.

If you wire in wall a house/office, you better of using CAT6. Doing so would provide installation that would be ready for the future.

I'm planning to set up a network with a gigabit switch. Some told me to go with cat5e and some told me to go with cat6...

is there a cat6e? maybe that'll make everyone happy

However, it depends on the ?customer? and their buying habits. Small Stores and some of the Mega stores can charge and Arm and a Leg (and few other parts) for a few feet of terminated CAT6.

to define the differenses between 5e and 6, they are physically the same. it's just that the cat 6 passes a more thourgh test then 5e and therefore has higher quality. it depends on the amount of times that the wirinside the cable is twisted and such. if u can find a good deal for cat 6, get it. i am not aware that there is a cat6e, but who knows? maybe a prototype.

Cat6 is actually radically different from cat5e. So be sure that all pieces/parts are cat6 if you want to have the benefits of it.

The copper wire is physically bigger and there is normally a plastic insert in the cable that maintains the twists for the length of cable.

Both are the same in the sense that they look a like and are constructed of similar plastic, copper etc.

However, CAT6 is Not a Cat5e that passed more rigorous testing.

CAT6 is specifically manufactured much with a better internal deigns (between the pairs) and thus it is 12 times less noisy than Cat5e. As you surely know electrical, quality (efficiency) is a direct product of Signal to Noise ratio.(SNR).

A better internal SNR makes the CAT6 capable of transferring higher frequency signal.

I've also heard that putting the ends on CAT6 is pretty hard. Anyone try this yet (punch down & rj45 ends)?
 
Cat 5e supports 10 and 100mb connections, Cat 6e supports the two and also gigabit. To take advantage of gigabit everything must support gigabit. If it's for home save yourself the money and just use Cat 5e.
 
It's not very much more expensive to get Cat6 cable. I just wired my house and got 1000ft of unshielded non-plenum Cat6 for $78. I think it's like $50 for cat5e.
 
I thought I read somewhere that cat 5e can support 1 gigabit connections and cat 6 can support 10 gigabit connections.
 
any of you guys experieced with the gigabit port that are built on the mobo? are they any good? or should i buy a gigabit card?
 
Small Home Network regular use.

Yes, it is just as good as any.

Server, heavy Duty Network, that depends on constant "Speed".

Look for a Network Pro form Intel and the like.
