Cat5e VS. Cat5

How was wondering what the performance increase is from cat5e to cat5. Because I just recently signed up for @home and wasn't sure if I should get cat5e or not. I just have the regular 10/100 nic cards from netgear (fa311). Are the cat5e only for gigabyte nic cards or what?

Go for Cat5e simply because it has more specification to better support the higher speeds of 100 Mbps LANs.

i am recommending cat5e for all new installations.

unless your budget is so tight, go for cat5e.

actually, for basic internet sharing, cat3 will do, but cat5 or higher is recommended.

I would recommend cat5e to minimize the effects of long runs. remember 100meters (some 350 ft) is the MAXIMUM between nodes for any specification you use. you'll notice hits after 100ft or so though.

Don't forget that Cat5e is practically required to get the full speed advantage of the new "Gigabit over copper" network cards. Even if you don't need it now for a 10/100 network, it could be useful in the future.

i have 5e
have no clue wut it stands for
but lets my network trasfer + or - 1 megabyte a sec
that is some nice speed
max was like 1.2
but it was thru aim, so slower than it is capable
but still damned fast

Cat5e = 1000mbs, if you have the proper hardware.

I ran 5e in my house, but only have 10/100 NIC's. Although, the connectors that I bought that plug in the wall, and the RJ-45 connectors are theoretically rated at 150mbs. At least that is what it said on the package.

So, go for the 5e, for future upgradeability!

Doesn't really matter in my opinion and the price difference is so little, so just get "e". I have have cat5e snagless cable, don't think it makes any difference if your using it at home, not like your running a one gig network...

So I should just stick with cat5 since I don't plan on upgrading to gb nic cards anytime soon. Cuz, I can get 50' ft of cat5 cable for 5 bucks is the reason i'm asking.

These days there is really no reason to get standard Cat5 cable (unless money is very tight, and you get a real bargain).

Cat5e has higher performance and therefore gives more headroom for defective or sub-standard parts, for example a corroded connector, a substandard crimp, or a cable which has been crushed or kinked.

While this is most important with gigabit ethernet it may potentially alleviate potential problems with slower speeds.

If the cable is cheap then you may as well get it - if it doesn't work, then you haven't lost much.

my SMC network cards bought about a year before already bundle Cat5e cable.
see buy.com such place, those belkin brand pre-snagged Cat5e cable are almost same price as old Cat5 cable.
