CAT5 effective range?

I'm trying to network two computers on different floors/opposite ends of my house. Wireless network strength isn't very good, so I was thinking of running CAT5 cable through my attic. I'd probably need 100+ feet of cable to do this, will I still get a good signal at this distance?

100BaseT = 100 meters, or roughly 285ft

This answer come from my son..He is the Cheif Network Engineer for a large Web-based hosting company...he knows his stuff

i just graduated high school, so im about to move out but i've got my own little house seperate from my parents and luckily the computer room to my computer is just about 100 feet, so I got a 100 foot cross over cable to network the two computers...

i haven't had any real problems with it (other then the bitches of 98 and XP networking in the earlier stages, before i updated the OS 🙂)

wireless networking seems too fickle at this point, but if you still want wireless they have something that can relay the signal, cant remember what they are called.. so you could place it halfway between the hub and your computer to relay the signal further...

I think the effective range for Cat5-1000 is up to 330 feet and Cat5 1500 is 600 feet. So you're fine.

Those are wireless range extenders. I bought one from d-link, horrible. Didn't work. I returned it twice. Don't bother with them, EVER.
