Cat5 Cable question

Hello there,

Just about to add a pc to my small network, at current it's just two networked using crossover cable. When I get a 5 port hub to add the extra PC is still cable fine to connect each PC to the hub:

Cable CAT 5e UTP 2M Patch Lead with RJ45 Plugs

Also, can I use my crossover cable to connect one of the pc's to the hub?

Thanks,

Corm

no you won't be able to use the crossover cable to connect the cables, unless you set it up to be a be a strait through.

You could use the crossover cable still if you plugged it into the uplink of the hub. That would in turn change the connection back to straight.

That seems logical, any implications of doing this?

Cheers,

Corm

p.s: any speed implications for having the third pc connected by a slightly longer cable (7m or 10m), I am hoping the effect will be negligable.

Yup you can always use a crossover cable to connect a PC to the "uplink" of a hub.

A crossover cable can also be used to connect the "normal" port of a hub to another "normal" port of another hub.
