I'm glad the Wheelbarrow stayed. It was the only one I could get in my family because the car and dog were always taken.

The Thimble should have been thrown away.

In a "Hey, let's watch paint dry while shaving with a cheese-grater" kind of way maybe. Monopoly is the slowest, least-strategic board game ever invented. I'm thoroughly convinced that that only reason people play Monopoly beyond age 15 is that they remember playing it at age 12 and the only reason kids played it at age 12 was that parents wanted the kids to go away, shut up and be lulled to sleep for 6 hours so that the parents could have fun doing something else without kids around. Without that whiff of nostalgia coloring the memories anyone who intelligently and dispassionately sat down and tried to get into Monopoly based solely on the games merits (of which it has none) would NEVER EVER go back and play it a 2nd time.

Somebody had a shitty childhood.

Anyone who thinks Monopoly is a good game only thinks that because they have never played another board game. Something good, like Settlers of Catan or something. I don't even really love Catan anymore since I've played it a lot, but it's still better than Monopoly.

lol this.

Let's be honest: kids play monopoly because it's a classic, everybody knows it, everybody owns it, and their relatives bought it for them.
Board games nerds play everything except monopoly. This should be enough of a proof.

I love monopoly. I also have played Settlers a lot (yes I like settlers more. But monopoly is more simple thus more family members can play.)

There is plenty of board games I have played. And yet I still love monopoly... guess your theory is wrong.

A bunch of haters are in this thread.

I don't play anymore except maybe once every other month when suddenly my son remembered that it's been a while and wanted to play, but back in college my friends and I used to have so much fun with it. The core game is pretty straightforward, yes, but the fun part for us was the wheeling and dealing on the side, trying to screw one particular player by ganging up on them (e.g. by trading properties, making arrangement for future trades, etc), and then the next few turns flip on your previous allies by joining up with a different player, that kind of stuff.

Indeed.

And easy enough to pick up, reliant on luck as much as strategy.

If a 5-year-old can wipe the floor with three adults over the course of an hour (no, we were not trying to lose) it's a game that pretty much anybody can enjoy.

Funny, the exact same reason is why so many people feel it sucks on such a massive scale. Roll the dice once, declare a winner and save everyone hours of boredom.

A lot of people are too competitive and are no fun to play games with.

And it's not boring if you are playing with people you, you know, like spending time with.

I have played MANY board games, own quite a few, go to the WBC every year. I have beta tested several games, on a beta set of my own game, and have beat designers at their own creations. So please keep that in mind when I say the following:

Our hardcore gaming group, which has met weekly for the past 9 years, still has monopoly in our rotation. If you know how to make deals, and the players along know how to make deals, then this game is VERY ruthless and cunning. Offering partial payments, future trade options, right of first refusals, limited immunity, etc are all part of the deals we create. Every property is worth something to somebody, you just need to know how to negotiate.

Many recent games suffer from over-complexity. There are several games out there currently where players are stuck "drawing dead" for multiple hours as the game draws out. This is a personal problem I have with "euro" style games. Everybody is stuck in the game until the whole thing is over. You have been outplayed, you are doomed to last place, but you must sit there and can never recover. In Monopoly, you can always sell out and leave the game when it becomes hopeless.

And for the record I *hate* Settlers of Catan. The rich get richer in that game, the luck of the dice is all important, and those that are in the worse positions have to offer more desperate deals to get anywhere in the game. Yes I know how to play it, and I know how to play it well. It does not mean that I like it or respect it.

My absolute favorite game is Acquire. But I am ALWAYS up for a 7 player game of Diplomacy.

Exactly. Monopoly actually has some very interesting strategies and sink holes built in that makes it fun after 80+ years.

interesting fact: if you can get houses on the orange or red properties, you're statistically likely to win the game.

Yeah, "I'm picking the wheelbarrow to hold all of the cash I'm going to make!"

You can't talk smack with a thimble. "I'm going to....put all my profits in my thimble?"

Monopoly is fun. You just need to make a drinking game out of it. Open the game box. Everybody takes a drink. Take out the board. Everybody takes a drink. Pick your pieces. Everybody takes a drink. Set up the Chance and Community Chest cards. Everybody takes a drink. The first person who says, "So, are we actually going to start playing," gets punched as hard as you can in the face. Everybody takes a drink. At this point, take all the fake money and start making it rain on the most attractive girl in the hopes that the last few shots have convinced her it's time to get naked. Boom, Monopoly just got fun.

It occurs to me that this may be why I've never been invited back to family game night.

Monopoly and other boardgames are great! As are card games and puzzles. I get why so many 'youts' think they're boring though. They don't know how to socialize without smack talking over a headset.
