Monopoly: cat replaces iron as new token

Monopoly fans have spoken: the iron token has been dropped and will be replaced by a cat.

Toy maker Hasbro announced the changes on Wednesday morning, hours after voting on Facebook closed

Fans from 120 countries voted.

The wheelbarrow, shoe and iron had been neck and neck for elimination through the Save Your Token Campaign. The new additions that people could vote for, as well as the cat, included a robot, a diamond ring, helicopter or guitar.

"We put five new tokens out for our fans to vote on and there were a lot of fans of the many different tokens, but I think there were a lot of cat lovers in the world that reached out and voted for the cat to be the new token for Monopoly," said Jonathan Berkowitz, vice president for Hasbro gaming marketing.

... you mean, real... physical boxed game boards?! This is heresy.

I'd vote for the cat too.

im beting the average voter was some grandma

Or, you know, typical Facebook users.

"OMG bacon! Cats! LOL zombies! I'm a fucking comedian!"

I'd vote for the cat too.

There are thousands of board games out there, and Monopoly is one of the worst. Yet it's also one of the most popular. I don't get it.

The iron was my favorite.. I don't know anyone who picked the wheelbarrow willingly.

I loved Monopoly when I was younger. I don't really have the patience for it anymore. My father was infuriating to play with. He played it like real life, and not to win, so games would take forever. He was conservative, and wouldn't take the risks necessary to win. I suppose he might have been trying to teach me economics, but it only served to piss me off :^D

This stuns me. Why on earth do people play Monopoly?

It's actually fun if you know how the strategies work.

Anyway, your token tells other players about you:

Boot- "I'm going to kick your ass"
Battleship- "I'm going to blow you out of the water"
Car- "I'm going to run over you"
Cat- "I'm....umm...a pussy?"

I was totally thinking this lol

I hate cats...fitting though. The only people who would play monopoly probably have about 5+ cats.

Replaced something only a woman would own, with something else, only a woman would own.

Because it's fun?

In a "Hey, let's watch paint dry while shaving with a cheese-grater" kind of way maybe. Monopoly is the slowest, least-strategic board game ever invented. I'm thoroughly convinced that that only reason people play Monopoly beyond age 15 is that they remember playing it at age 12 and the only reason kids played it at age 12 was that parents wanted the kids to go away, shut up and be lulled to sleep for 6 hours so that the parents could have fun doing something else without kids around. Without that whiff of nostalgia coloring the memories anyone who intelligently and dispassionately sat down and tried to get into Monopoly based solely on the games merits (of which it has none) would NEVER EVER go back and play it a 2nd time.

Is there some reason why Monopoly can't just have all of the tokens?

As kids we played with house rules and the games only lasted about 2 hours. Of course it helped that we lost the rules sheet and just went off memory for most things.

Lot of Monopoly hate here. I loved the game personally. If the game didn't take so damn long I'd probably play the boardgame more often whenever I get together with my siblings/cousins. I actually play it all the time on my phone.

EDIT: Why couldn't they just add the Cat vs getting rid of another token?

I love monopoly. Bi-annual Monopoly matches with most my family. Great times.

But still... a cat? i wanted the helicoptor.
