Yeah, that explains all the seeing eye cats and other cats in the service animal industry.

Or, maybe your idiotic generalization could be explained by the fact that cats are solitary animals while dogs are social and live in packs.

I'm talking about pets. Nobody's going to train a cat to watch for crosswalk lights and to flush the toilet. Cats simply don't do what they don't want to do. The ability for them to even choose puts them on a level higher than the low-brow brainless slave of a dog, regardless of what they're doing 😛

Hopefully you're not stupid enough to actually believe that the inability or unwillingness of cats to perform trained tasks is an indication of higher intelligence.

I bet you'd have a tough time training an amoeba to do tricks too, but I wouldn't exactly call that an indication of heightened independence or intelligence.

I'd get two. When we got our cat the vet had trouble selling the last one and tried to sell it to us, we debated but the issue was paying for the vacines, declawing etc. Thats something to consider too, if you get one declawed you'll want to do both so it's fair for them. Though try to train them not to scratch stuff and you may not have to declaw them.

Cats are so funny, I can only imagine two of them.

2 cats from the same litter will grow up to be great friends and playmates.

My female Karly lost her brother 6 months ago. They were the best of friends for 11+ years. She's still very depressed.

A male and female from the same litter are about as good as you can get. They will take care of each other, play with other, comfort each other, etc.

a cat can take care of themselves. 😀

Maybe, you should get a stuffed bunbun then.

You must have very limited exposure to dogs then. Since dogs have been proven to be able to problem solve and can be trained to do everything from detecting cancer to assisting the disabled.

Choose? They don't have the ability to be trained for any of those tasks or willingness to learn. Or they're too stupid to learn.

Ok, ok, dog people & cat people, we all know you both want to extend your egos through your choice in pets. Each one has its own benefits. Dogs train well, and cats are generally better in terms of self-maintenance.

This thread can either stay on target with the OP's question, or else it can be about waffles vs pancakes.

Waffles. And bacon.

How do you know? I've seen some cats do some crazy stuff. Use and flush the toilet? Turn on/off lights, etc. Just because they can't (easily) be trained does not make them stupid.

No, they're perfectly capable. Just because YOU are too stupid to train them doesn't mean they're too stupid to learn 😉 The fact that a cat can frustrate a trainer to the point of giving up is awesome. A dog trainer pops a few scooby snacks and has that big dumb animal jumping through hoops over and over just to get another little scooby snack. What a dumbass

You're making it sound like the ability to learn complex tasks is a sign of a dumb animal. Dogs are social animals and work closely with humans. Thousands of years of evolution led up to this.

Cats are not easily trainable. I think this has more to do with the fact that they're solitary animals, not because they're stupid. But in any case, not easily learning tricks certainly isn't a sign of intelligence in itself. I find that the most stupid argument that cat owners make, especially because you could apply that same logic to anything else that won't learn tricks.

"My pet bug could learn tricks like your slobbering dog, but it's more independent and chooses not to"

Please provide examples of a cat that can be trained/learn to find humans, detect mines, assist blind people, detect cancer/seizures, etc.

If you can't, then you can't say they are perfectly capable, so please stop taking out of your ass. Maybe, b/c they are so difficult to train is b/c they are stupid and unable to learn.

The thread addresses only cat people.

I like both cats and dogs. 2 kittens, from the same litter especially, will be lifetime playmates. My cats that didn't even grow up in the same home (one in mine, one in my mom's, both males) play chase every day at certain times, take naps together, etc.

You guys need to lighten up. We're talking about domesticated pet cats and dogs here. It's not like it's a serious discussion about whether the plane actually takes off or not.

If you want a serious reply, it's all about breeds. You'll never see a fucking poodle guiding a blind person. Certain breeds can be trained to do all kinds of shit while other breeds of the same type of animal cannot. Cats have smaller brains than dogs. Some breeds of dog have brains more than twice the size, suggesting they have significantly greater intel.

Big freakin deal. A pet isn't going to be trained to sniff out drugs and bombs at airports you retards. We're talking about pet cats versus pet dogs. Jeez. Way to go, guys. Way to go.

Dog trainers don't use any rare, special breed of dog to perform these duties. They use the same kind of dogs that you can buy, usually German Shepards, Dobermans or Collies. The same type of dog that has the ability to taught these duties is the same type of dog that you can buy and train to fetch your newspaper. The highly trainable brain and willingness to learn is still there.

The same cannot be said of cats.

Maybe. Maybe not. It depends on the cats.

Mine were from the same litter, and they merely tolerated each other. Later on, they pretty much avoided each other. One eventually had a stroke and started having seizures; he died in his sleep. His sister never showed any signs of distress, quite the contrary, she became much friendlier and pleasant. Based on that, and her behavior while he was still alive, I really don't think she liked him very much. He was a stereotypical cat: Arrogant, stuck-up, and viewed humans as mobile food dispensers. She is more like a puppy, following people around, showing us around during our morning routines, and waiting by the door when someone gets home.

Sometimes one of them would seem to attempt to be nice, and maybe start licking the other's head a bit. Then the one being licked would turn around and glare, then they'd start swatting at each other and run off in opposite directions.

And then some cats get along really well.

if you can get 2 go for it. getting 2 kittens from the same litter is an ideal way to adopt cats.

they generally become lifelong buddies and entertain themselves- and by extension, you.
