Cat pee in carpet

Im sure you can guess from the title what my problem is. So far regular carpet shampoo from a spray can has proved worthless so it's on to some more serious steps. I'm going to get a blacklight bulb from Home Depot to locate the source of the smell and a big bottle of Nature's Miracle cleaner since it gets pretty good online reviews. Any other advice? The only good thing is that I can live with a cleaning product that discolors carpet. The smelly spot is under my bed so I don't care how it looks. I just want to get rid of the damned smell.
 
I don't know if it works on carpet, but my cat peed on a shirt that I left on the ground once. He was sick, so I wasn't very mad. I used shout advanced. The problem you are going to have is if there is any padding under the carpet. It that is the case, I would rent a steam cleaner and use that.

You don't really need a blacklight if you follow your nose. You will find the source if you get down on the ground and smell around.
 
I dated a girl who had a cat that would jump up on the stove, piss on it, then hop down.

Pleasant smell that wasn't realized where exactly it was until you tried to cook....

They make urine destroyer "enzyme" sprays that I use when my dog had accidents...not sure how useful it is on cats.

I don't care what people say, dogs are easier to own than cats 😀
 
My cat has peed in shoes a few times. It's impossible to remove the smell. I even put one shoe in the bathtub for 24 hours together with a cocktail of various chemicals. Shoe was partially dissolved. Stench of cat pee remained.
 
We had a cat who was sick and peeing on things a while back. We dumped vinegar and baking soda on the carpet, and then used a steam cleaner to get it all out. Seemed to work really well. Almost too well, because those areas are noticibly brighter than the surrounding carpet.

A few years back I had a cat that occasionally peed in places other than the cat box.

Nature's miracle works well.

The website also says (depending where the pee is and how much there is, mattress for instance), it may get a little stronger before it gets better after addition. It could take up to 2 weeks to remove the smell. although that was never my experience.

This stuff works waaaaaay better than Natures Miracle at getting rid of odors.

Walmart stocks it with the air fresheners on the grocery side, instead of with the pet supplies.

You won't get rid of it. Ever. You'll think you did but one warm muggy summer day you'll realize its still there.

The only smart option is to remove the carpet and under padding and possibly remove and replace the floor boards. There are some good sealing primer paints that can cover those spots if its seeped through and into the boards.

Leaving it will tell your cat it's a good place to go if you keep it. It will still smell it and it will keep returning. This is coming from someone who had a 20 year old cat that started going wherever. I tried everything and nothing truly "worked"
 
If all else fails I might try bleach. The carpet is under the bed so I don't care if it fucks up the color.

My male cat went nuts the last year of his life and sprayed all over my house, so I know what you are dealing with.

For carpet, enzymatic cleaners like natures miracle are not going to do anything. Why? Because the pee will penetrate through the carpet, into the pad and, ultimately, into the floor sheathing beneath your carpet. The enzymatic cleaner can only destroy the urine it touches, and since it won't reach the sheathing you will have the cat pee smell until you do something about it.

For me, the only thing that worked was to pull up the carpet, cut out the saturated pad to expose the sheathing, and then double coat the sheathing with an oil based (vapor barrier forming) paint. Once the paint dries you can add a new swatch of pad and re-stretch the carpet. A good carpet cleaner should take car of the urine in the carpet itself. If it doesn;t you will have to replace the carpet, but its worth a shot to try and save the carpet. You will have to deal with the sheathing either way.

If you think cat pee on carpet is tough, wait till you have to deal with cat pee on porous concrete.

u wont get rid of the smell.
the pee seeped into the padding.

u have to rip out the padding.
might as well get whole new carpeting

and get rid of cat

This, aside from blacklights help you find the EXACT spot. Following your nose isn't 100% accurate all the time.
