Stupid cat likes to lay on my wife's laptop. It's closed with a towel over it, and she doesn't weigh that much. Wife says she won't hurt it, but I wonder?

Won't hurt as long as it is closed. But, it is a bad habit that should be discouraged. Wife's cat - wife's laptop - don't get involved. :)

I think that unless the laptop is off, you might not want to put a towel on top of it. My laptop was asleep once, and I set a pillow on it by accident, well when I went to retrieve the laptop a few hours later, it was hotter than if I had just had to compile the universe.

Cat is not more than maybe 7-8 lbs, and yes the laptop is off and closed when the towel is over it. I agree with wifes cat and her laptop comment :)

this is definitely going to be the most-viewed notebook thread :p

anyway, my boss has a big dog. maybe 40lbs. his dog broke his keyboard when he jumped on it once.

but you always hear people say "the cat was on my keyboard" and it's often true. the weight should not be a consideration if it's less than 10 lbs. i think my laptop is heavier than that ;)

p.s. for the computer's sake, i hope it's off when the towel is on it... that's a heating issue you might want to be concerned about if the thing is actually running when you do that.

I leave my laptop on, as it crunches DC stuff 24/7. I keep a can of air around, and it scares the hell out of the cats, and they get off the laptop kb. Eventually, I'm hoping they will get the point, although I'm rather doubtful... Having the canned air always around does make it easier for cleaning off the cat hair though. LOL

The problem is really this...both the cat and my wife have a mind of their own, and neither of them listen! lol I did tell her (wife) that I do not have the money to buy her a new one if the cat F's it up.

Try flipping the compressed air upside down before sprayin the cat ;)

My cat sleeps on top of my thinkpad. she's a good 10-15 lbs
it scared me at first (thinking she's going to crack the screen or something)
but it's been like 3 years now ( and I still shoo her away if she's on top of the tp)

but nothing bad

They like the warmth of that thing. We had a cat like that, sitting on front of the air outlet when it was on. That was worrying. If the openings are protected from the hairs it wouldn't really matter, but I agree with the first answer.
