We have a 2.5 year old cat that started sleeping all the time and not eating. We took her to the vet and they ran tests and she tested positive for feline lukemia.

They gave her steriods, antibiotics and vitamins and she was ok for a few days and has started going back down hill..

Anyone ever have cats with this? Anything you can do besides euthanize them?

For animals with cancer, there's usually not much you can do. Give her a couple of days full of everything she loved to do, feed her well, play with her, pet her and just love her and then put her to sleep when she hasn't suffered yet.

I'm sorry man, there's nothing you can do.

That's horrible to hear. I'm sorry...it's a really painful, horrible illness. You'll be forced to put her to sleep, and as hard as it sounds, it's better before they suffer all the time...no one wants to remember their loved one like that.

Please think about putting her down switfly. It's heartbreaking seeing your pet go down the tubes because of that disease. I had an 8 y/o cat that we had to put down because of it. I didn't recognize the symptoms and she was in a pretty bad state by the time we were able to get her to a vet.

On her way to be euthanized...

Anyone who reads this and has cats if you bring ANY other cats into your home make sure to have them tested first. Get them immunized!

Evidently its extremly contagious and our vet even said if they are left outside its easy to get it from other cats.

That is how we lost ours....

I don't think feline leukemia is a cancer - it's a virus, isn't it?

EDIT: Should have read the whole thread :p

This cat was adopted from the animal shelter and the Vet told us our shelter did not give cats vaccinations against this for awhile. And if I knew this was like "the plague" for cats I would have had her tested and vaccinated.

I think she had it when we brought her home because she got sick a month or so after we got her and the vet said it was a "respiratory infection" and gave her antibiotics.

This whole situation with this cat and another cat we had to have put down a few weeks back has left me with alot of animosity torwards the vets in our area...

And no more adoptions from the shelter either...

It won't cure it, but the cat will live longer and healthier if you add aloe to the water dish every day. I don't mean thick aloe straight from the plant, get a drinkable form of Aloe such as the one sold by Market America.

My friend's cat has feline leukemia. He's six or seven now and still going strong.

This is really a pet owner problem, not anyone elses.

Any fool can go online to see what vaccines a pet should have.

Experience is my friend. Hence why I gave the advice I gave. My other cat is up to date with her vaccinations. I learn from my mistakes.

Just a quick question, so if your cat was in a decline, in a state of pain, what would you do? Don't give me this crap about helping extend her life by giving her up to some .org . Wouldn't you choose to have her put to sleep peacfully rather than extend the pain?

Cats done for, they are miserable and will only lay around until they waste away and die. You can either be there for your cat or put them out of their misery

Why is it called leukemia if it isn't cancer? It can't be cancer if it's contagious... unless it's a virus that causes cancer (like HPV) ?
