Cat is lost

I had put up an ad on craigslist for someone to adopt my two house cats. They're both de-clawed and neutered. I found someone to take them and she picked them up 2.07.07. She called back two days and told me that the cats we're not behaving and wanted to give them back. I explained to her that I couldn't take them back, and to just to allow them more time to get used to her new house, they're just frightened. I didn't hear from her again so I figured that after the cats got settled in to their new home everything was ok.

Last night I was taking out the garbage and I saw a big box in our driveway. I though UPS dropped something off w/o knocking (which is normal). I couldn't remember ordering anything though. On top of the box I found my cats' vet records. I had given them to her w/ the cats. I opened the box and found that she had brought back my cat (1 of 2) and left it there.

I got this email from her this morning.
I have tried calling you but am not reaching you...I have tried to keep the cats but I can't. They have really messed my kides up. I'm not quite sure why you would have me take home 2 cats that were so mean when you knew they were for my kids. I dropped them off at your place tonight. I tried knocking but no one answered. They on your porch in a box w/ all their papers. I have tried to find them a new home for you but no one wants them because they are so mean. I have no choice but to give them back.

I wrote her back this:
You dropped off both cats in a box? There was only 1 cat in the box. While it doesn't matter, I've honestly never had a problem w/ either cat. You can pretend that you tried to contact me if it makes you feel better. I have never avoided your phone calls (you left no voice mail), nor your emails. You and I know that you just took the cowards way out and left the cats in a box in my driveway.

I thought writing her that email would help, but I'm still pissed. I can't believe that she would just abandon them in my drive way. Its February and I live in PA. Yesterday's high temp was 44, the cat could have froze overnight. The only time I wasn't home last night was when I ran to target to get cat food and litter.

Cliffs:
woman adopts my cats from craigslist (2.07.07)
calls 2 days later said cats are having problem (2.09.07)
advised normal, they'll settle in and calm down
She left them in a box in my drive way (2.21.07)

That is just messed up. I mean if she wasn't getting along with the cats that is one thing.. but leaving them out in the freezing? Not cool.

File a complaint for animal cruelty or something against her? The cats were legally hers, I'd think the system has a way for you to get her if you want

sounds like you should have screened her for retardedness before giving the cats to her.

she probably couldnt find a buyer so she returned them to the "store". or worse maybe she killed one.

WTF. I would be really angry if this happened. What kind of uncaring idiot leaves cats in a box in front of someone's house without knowing if/when they will be home? Is this lady stupid? Does she not have cat cages? How hard is it to put the cats in a cage and leave them in your house until you can find something to do? Has this lady never heard of the humane society? I would not be surprised if her actions were illegal in at least a minor way, possibly in the form of animal cruelty. I would contact the local humane society. I'd also try to put some treats outside with some sort of familiar scented clothing or cat bed to lure the other cat back. Not sure if that ever works, though.

Also, if I were the OP I would immediately take the cats back if asked and find some other place to take them. What was the situation such that you couldn't take them back? No offense, but it sounds a little weird to me, this whole situation. If I ever had someone adopt my cats I would bend over backwards to make sure it was a good home and might even break in and steal them back if I thought it wasn't.
