Modded CAT 6.9 Drivers

All I've done is add the X1950XTX details to various INF files, nothing fancy.

* Download the WDM and Catalyst Control Centre installs separately from the ATI web site.

* Install the modified device driver
* Install 6.9 WDM drivers
* Install 6.9 Catalyst Control Centre
* Reboot
* Enjoy

Here's the back story

I recieved an X1950XTX as an RA replacement for a dead X1900XT. But sadly the swine never gave me discs. Worse yet standard CAT drivers wouldn't install so I figured it must have been a one-off pre production engineering sample or something dodgy like that. I could take it back, wait another month and get it sorted, or, ah heck it, I'll make this bastard work! So I got stuck into various Catalyst 6.8 driver install files and in the end they recognised the card and installed.

Benchies looked good, everything works woohoo!!!!

Only later to find, CAT 6.8 don't work with X1950XTX's. ooops I did something really clever

So now the 6.9's are out, applied the same changes to the same files and yes we have a winner.

be warned 3Dmark05 and 3DMark06 won't allow compare posts onto the internet as they think you've got hacked drivers.

Thanks. What did you do? Was it a text edit to include the new chipset model name or number in the INF data?

I just do not understand why ATI would release a new high end card and then not support it with current drivers (6.8) and especially new drivers (6.9) that were released after the card was released. I called tech support for Powercolor, my card's maker, and the tech did not even seem to understand what I was asking when I said the in-box CD 6.7 drivers worked but asked why newer 6.8 ATI drivers would not (this was a day before the official 6.9 were released.) He just told me to install the new 6.8 drivers and ignored me when I told him the INF would not recognize my card, when I do that. He did not even seem to know what an X1950XTX card was (he kept saying do you mean X1900XT.)

This is my first ATI card, so I think I am going to RMA it and get a 7900GTX instead, since I never had anything happen with new drivers on many Nvidia chipset cards, over many years. I am afraid of future problems, as the DX10 cards come out, if not many X1950 sell, maybe the X1950s will be such a minority of the cards out and with ATI focusing on DX10 issues, ATI will continue to have driver problems with X1950s in future software releases. I only have time of three more weeks to RMA it, so I do not feel like gambling on this.

ATI R600 are at least Jan 07 away ... Nvidia G80 aren't even in production... they go in production late next month and launch at late November or early December. Also the driver issue will be fixed by next month.

That was pretty much it, there were six INF files to add various bits of data to and bingo it all came together like a treat.

All else equal, I would rather keep the X1950. I even agree ATI will likely fix it but it is not worth the $460 risk to find out and I only have a few weeks to RMA it.

Not to take away from the OP's work here, good job :beer:

However, telling someone to grow up because they expect drivers that actually support their brand new flagship card is pretty unreasonable. IIRC, ATI did this with the intital X1900s as well. Although, apparently individual manufacturers had modified the Cats to work and put them on the cds that shipped with the cards. Neither company is perfect, but launching a flagship card without driver support shows a lack of attention to detail and support IMO.

I think that he has a right to expect his card work and a right to be upset that it does not with the drivers provided as they are by the manufacturer.

CodeBasher,

Sorry if I did not state this before. Thanks for doing this and great job.

Everyone,

I finally talked to an ATI tech support. The tech put me on hold a fairly long time, so I assume he did ask others about the problem. He came back got information (questioned if I really had an X1950) and put me on hold again. He then came back and confirmed that no Catalyst drivers support the X1950. He said this was the case because the card is not ready for release until October (he even kept questioning if I really had an X1950 because he did not understand how I could.) I told him that his own Company?s press release stated it was to be released on September 12th or so. He said that was initial the date but it got pushed to October. I then said well I have one (I really did it politely ? I was not a smart Alec.) He said he guessed 3rd party vendors shipped too early. I then told him NewEgg sold ATI branded ones and gave him the 100-4XXXX model number. He said that was just a listing; he was certain that neither NewEgg nor any other merchant had any ATI branded X1950s. I told him the ATI X1950, on NewEgg, had 7 user reviews indicating those people bought it and that it was listed as ?In-stock? and NewEgg is good about listing in-stock and out of stock items. He iterated he was certain no ATI ones are on the market and no X1950s should be sold until October and the Catalyst drivers after that would then support it.

Does any of that make sense?

I am likely jumping to conclusions and I understand the driver issue is simply not including INF data but the tech was so certain no X1950s should be out (he kept iterating, "I do not understand how you bought one"), I wnder if initial production was halted because of a problem and some cards made it through (the ones we and others bought.)

Has anyone seen any X1950s in a brick-and-mortar store? Best Buy etc. likely have better control so if any store like that is selling them, the tech did not know about what he was talking.

The X64 X1950XTX CAT 6.9 Drivers are now available, grab them HERE
and follow the same procedure as the 32 bit ones detailed in my original post.

For those who like the X32 NON CCC version of the drivers where the settings are integrated with no need for .NET 2.0 as shown here http://www.ngohq.com/showthread.php?t=7587 I've added the X1950XTX details to them and they are available HERE

cheers guys

Use these drivers with the modified INF's and see if they solve your problem. ATI hasn't been known to leave new users out to dry in the past...

Both sides have a good point. I'd agree ATI not having official driver support for the X1950 for two months now (well, a month and change) is laughable.

But considering this guy has a solution staring him right in the face (modded drivers which simply add his card's ID to the drivers list), and he's still bitter and wants to RMA a perfectly working card for that reason... Well, that's like a cross between spite and ignorance.

Why go through so much trouble (and pick up an inferior card) just to "prove a point" so to speak. Just use the modified drivers and wait for the next driver release.
