New Features

This release of Catalyst® introduces the following new features:

* Overlay Theater Mode Update
* Adaptive Anti-Aliasing for ATI Radeon® 9500 and above

Overlay Theater Mode Update

Catalyst® 6.5 introduces a new option for Overlay Theater Mode. The new option, Standard Dual Mode is available for Radeon® X1x00 series of graphics cards. This new feature now allows users to playback video using hardware acceleration when it is played on both displays (clone mode). Hardware acceleration decreases CPU utilization, allowing the PC to run smoother and faster. When using two displays in clone mode, video playback will be identically displayed on both display devices. For Radeon® X1000 series products (Avivo Video) overlay is per-display and true overlay will be used for both displays. For pre-Radeon® X1x00 boards, there is only one hardware overlay, so video on the second clone display device is either software-rendered (i.e. "Same on all" selection) or the Windows desktop is displayed but the video will not show through the color key (i.e., "Standard mode" selection).
Adaptive Anti-Aliasing for ATI Radeon® 9500 and above

Adaptive Anti-Aliasing smoothes out the surfaces in an entire scene unlike Multi-Sample which works only on edge surfaces. Adaptive AA has the ability to work on transparent or opaque texels, like those that comprise a surface texture. Previously this feature was available on the ATI Radeon® X1000 family products. Starting with Catalyst® 6.5, Adaptive AA support is now available to ATI Radeon® 9500 products and above.

Performance Improvements

As with most Catalyst® releases, performance has increased in various situations. The PCI Express bandwidth optimization code in Catalyst® 6.5 brings performance improvements for both the ATI Radeon® X1600 and Radeon® X1300 Crossfire configurations, including:

* Up to 23% gain in UT2004
* Up to 20% gain in Splinter Cell

Negative. They have a whole section for driver downloads for notebooks with ati graphics.

Did it used to be that way? I know Ive read that several times before, that the laptop mfg. had to get the drivers. Ive never had a laptop with a chipset that could actually play games, so I didnt have to worry about it.

6.5's are in there, under notebooks with ATi graphics. They only go up to X800 for supported, have you tried them? I dont see why they wouldnt work, you could at least try.

edit, someone else agrees with me. Still not sure I am right. :eek:

The notebook support from ATI is only for specific integrators with specific products. The notebook manufacturer is indeed responsible for the drivers.

There are 3rd party utilities to mod the drivers to work, as well as 3rd party assembled drivers like Omega's that support mobility as well. You should be able to run the latest Catalyst's with your notebook running ATI graphics soon after they are released if not right away.

AAA has been available on 9xxx and x8xx cards for a while now, through a registry hack. They only now made it official. Not sure about the 9800's or 9500's, but a x800xt could run games like HL2 and Farcry with AAA enabled at 1280x960 with decent playable fps.

Oooo... that's right, I remember now and I believe I gave it a try like 6 months ago. It worked wonders with fence textures in HL2 and BF2. I totally forgot about that. I'll have to fire that up again. Thanks munky :D

6.5's are installed and appear to be working properly. In order to get BF2 to work, I did need to uninstall ATI Tool, reinstall it and recreate new profiles.

Strange that they have indiscriminate mobility X1600 drivers for notebooks under Vista, then.

yeah it does.

This driver set seems a bit better than the 6.4's IMO.

Not so strange if you read the linked page...is it?

They're unsupported beta drivers for a beta OS aimed primarily at developers.

That's what I got upon arriving in the Desktop, after installing the official 6.5 drivers ...

http://img476.imageshack.us/img476/5462/cccerror1xe.jpg

Translation: CLI Application (Command Line Interface) has encountered a problem and must be closed ...

That's what I got upon arriving in the Desktop, after installing the official 6.5 drivers.

I had the official Catalyst 6.4 installed before. So I un-installed both Primary and Secondary video adapters first. Then, I went in Safe Mode, and used the latest version of Driver Cleaner, and entirely got rid of Catalyst 6.4 that way, as I usually do.

I even ran a Registry Cleaner application to make sure there would be no errors caused by missing Registry entries/keys or such issues related to the Registry.

Then, I came back in Normal Mode to install the new Catalyst 6.5, with Catalyst Control Center. It installed properly without any errors whatsoever. Then I rebooted, it arrived at the Desktop, and atfer some HDD activity (probably because it had to load settings and CCC itself for the first time), I got that error.

Please note: Microsoft's .NET Framework 2.0 is installed.

I'm now using Catalyst 6.5 Driver Only, along with Ray Adam's ATi Tray Tools.

The only problem I have is the CCC, and nothing else. It just refuses to start without showing that error window in the first place, only to close immediately after, after I close the error window itself.

I would like to use the AVIVO Video Converter, but I think I must have CCC installed to use it. But unfortunately, as you see, I can't get the CCC to work at all.

Any suggestions ?

If there is a way to make the AVIVO Video Converter work without the CCC installed at all, then I would really like to know. Because that's technically the only reason why I wanted to install CCC.

<snipped to save brain matter>

I'll bet it's the .NET 2. I had an issue with CCC when I tried .net 2, reverted to 1.godknows and a clean install of the drivers and it sorted itself out.

Oh, reverting to .NET 1.0 would fix that ?

Hmm, well, I must try that.

Wouldn't it'd be strange that an older version of it would fix anything to that matter ? Is 2.0 even "final" anyway ? I'm not sure if Microsoft ever clearly stated so or not. I remember there was some "Beta" version for 2.0, but if I recall correctly, the one I downloaded was two weeks ago, and did not have anything labeled "Beta" for it. It just said "2.0".

Oh well ...

Don't bother with CCC or .NET - just use ATi Tray Tools with ATi's base driver.
