I'm glad they tested the XGI Volari as well. Very impressive job by ATI, now we need some comprehensive evaluation on something other than DVD playback. I'm very interested in HD decoding, and even more so, the touted transcoding performance.

Ajem! 6600GT??? What's that?? can't they compare it to a current gen 7800?? I call BIAS after seeing AT's AVIVOvsPurevideo review. Maybe new drivers make it better for ATi, but you can't compare a brand new tech with a non-current gen tech.

That is ridiculous. They are comparing a 6600 to an X1800. The 7 series Pure Video is far better than the first generation. Give me a break...

At any rate though...nice improvements ATI. I am impressed.

Does the 7800 bring anything over the 6600GT for DVD decoding? I would have liked to see the best that Nvidia has to offer, thats for sure.

It was nice to see the XGI doing relatively well in that review.

What does 7 series purevideo offer over the previous gen? The 6600GT and 7800 show the same Purevideo feature support according to Nvidia.

Good catch! I didnt see that. That is a good question, I am sure they have a 7800 series card that they could have used? It will be interesting to see the comparison with a newer nvidia card.

Agreed, after seeing their old solution, I was disgusted. 5.13's coming "next week" should be an awsome improvement.

One of the best features of the Catalyst 5.13 is that the software is a free upgrade. As long as you have DVD software that supports DXVA, the AVIVO video processing will work. Owners of Built by ATI cards obviously have access to ATI's Multimedia Center as well. In comparison, PureVideo has never been free. It starts off at $20 for the "bronze" edition with basic SPDIF out support or 2 channel audio, $30 for the gold version with 5.1 analog out, and $50 for the platinum version with DTS support.

You do realize that AT's article was well before the Avivo features were even implemented and ATI specifically stated that the full Avivo feature set would be available at the end of the year, right????

LOL! In other news P4 spanks AMD K6-2.

This article is worthless unless they use a GT/GTX.

How is 7800 video playback any different than a 6600 GT?

The 7800 series has an updated Purevideo core, including support for H.264.

The AT article had much different results.

Not to mention that ATI card costs about 3 times as much.

I'm betting it's not much different, but who knows.

But of course, the nVidiots are in a panicked frenzy, so anything to take away from results is their friend

Well if you consider a brand new $400 card beating a 2 year old $125 card a win

No its not, its the exact same. Be glad they didnt take a 6800GT/Ultra, they dont offer WMV support compared to the 6600 line..

Elite Bastards: ATI's AVIVO Technology, Part Deux - CATALYST 5.13

With CATALYST 5.13, the Radeon X1800 has taken a giant leap upwards, and now scores a not far short of perfect 108 points in HQV. ATI are more than confident that this level of playback quality is unrivalled and unbeatable, and indeed they have stated that they won't be trying to capture those last few points to get a perfect 130 HQV score for the simple reason that it won't impact real-world image quality during video playback at all.

Interesting insight into ATI's transcoder:

....What makes things really interesting is if I tell you a little secret about this application. You're probably assuming it uses the vast power of the Radeon X1800 to convert video so fast, don't you? Well, you'd assume wrong - At present, the AVIVO Video Converter uses entirely software acceleration, GPU acceleration is not present in any shape or form. ATI have managed to create such a well tuned process by leveraging the knowledge and power of their 'Cobra' engine, as used by ATI's Multimedia Center and All-In-Wonder products. This software transcoding ability hasn't gone unnoticed, and ATI are supposedly currently in discussion with several major companies with regard to licensing this software for use in third-party products.
...

and

Which brings us to the bad news and, to my mind, this is bad news. Despite the totally software accelerated abilities of AVIVO Video Converter, the software will require you to have a Radeon X1000 series board to make use of it. NVIDIA users are straight out of luck, as you might expect, but what will gall you more is the lack of support for ATI's Radeon Xx00 and 9x00 series of parts - If you want to use this tool, it's an X1000-based board or nothing

The 7800 series has an updated Purevideo core, including support for H.264.

Does H264 support work yet? and how would that affect DVD decoding tests?
