I have installed the new control panel, not sure if I understand the benefits of it. Seems about the same once you find everything - so I guess time will tell if it has anything to offer.

Well I guess time will tell if the automatic update and hot fix functions make a difference. Otherwise the 4.9 drivers seem stable (as usual) on my system. I guess it may be nice to dl saved in game settings also.

KOTOR had serious performance issues and also has been flaky stability wise with the 4.8s(although the 4.9s do adress one of the many issues they had with the 4.8s at least), Tron 2.0 I get a random CTD with the 4.8s that I didn't with prior versions and Sacrifice is still borked. I figure maybe, just maybe they may have Sac fixed by now as it has been two years now to work out their problems in that game. KOTOR and Tron2.0 I'm hoping that by sometime in '05 or '06 they will have the bugs worked out- but I certainly wouldn't bet on it with how long it has taken them to fix Sac. I'll wait to DL them until I can find out if this doesn't break any new games- it's very tempting to go back to the 3.10s with the amount of problems they keep adding to the new drivers.

I still have my old 8500 128MB @ 300/300 running the Omega 3.10's. No issues, still runs great and suprisingly fast.

Haha, you don't forget anything, do you? *looks at Mem's username*

Hehe yes Megatomic my memory is long when he comes to people that use beta drivers ;).

I`ve done further testing with the 4.9s and have not found any problems with any of my games so I`ll be keeping these on my PC,just like I normally do(remember Driver Cleaner is your friend :)).

i installed 4.9 and CCC and here are a few things:

1) D3 fps didn't move
2) FRAPScan no longer identify DX9.0c runtime
3) I can't verify if the 4.9s are installed; I know they are, but it doesn't show this anywhere! new control panel I think is to blame.
4) My screen started twitching for about 3 minutes and then it fixed and never came back.
5) I get about 2-3 CLI.exe in my task manager, each hogging anywhere between 2-30 MB.
6) UT2K4 seemed a LOT smoother (no fps taken)

I really wish you wouldn't take my post out of context. Don't make it seem like I'm trying to say something I am not. So take the post at face value. No hidden meanings. :)

I can edit it out if you wish.

I installed 4.9 after doing the usual Driver Cleaner/Safe mode dance.

It installed fine.

The new CCC will take some getting used to, but it's not a big concern for me.

What *IS* a big concern, is that the first game I tried after installing the new driver was Splinter Cell (not PT). It loaded but the main menu was completely corrupt and none of the menu items were readable. Did anyone else experience that?

On a side note, it is interesting that the release notes for 4.9 mention Fary Cry 1.2 when that isn't even out yet.

Elcs, you don't need to use the CCC. I downloaded the package with the traditional control panel, it's only half the size of the driver set with the CCC in it.

As Megatomic suggested,McArra just download the 26mb package ,that has the traditional control panel.

I`m using the new CCC which I like and it also looks a lot better, takes awhile to find all the settings like on the old traditional control panel, but I`m getting the hang of it.

If you get lost use the "help" index,it has all the contents of the new ATI CCC listed.

I am concerned about these new drivers because during the installation two messages appeared saying: "the drivers you are about to install are not WHQL certified"! Isn't this weird?

no.

I think it's because ATi is turning these driver sets out so quikly...

Hmmm weird, I never got that message and I`ve used both the old and new control panel with 4.9s,I did use Driver Cleaner to make sure no old ATi files were in my system.

Btw if you go with the new CCC,make sure you`ve Net Frame 1.1 installed or you`ll get an error if you try to launch CCC(see the release notes for more info).

Doom 3 came out on 3 August, efficient drivers to play Doom 3 on ATI hardware comes on 10 septembar, looks like they are late, as NVIDIA users have already compleated Doom3, far ago

Oh! NVIDIA has small file size for Download, good thing for dial-up users

All I can say is that it must suck to be a dial-up user. Don't blame ATI for the plight of the downtrodden (dial-up users). :p

I`ve finished Doom 3 with my ATI card ;),as to dial-up well you`ll find most gamers are using faster connections like cable etc,I would hate to use a FX 6800 or XT800 card for gaming on dial-up....You can get round large downloads with dial-up by using a download manager like ones built into Mozilla/Opera etc (this lets you pause/resume downloads at your convenience).

it does :p

fortunately, with a single big package and resumable d/l, i got mine overnight while i am sleeping . . . . heck, i can d/l even while i am playing a game - forget doing anything else on the 'net. . . . :)

actually i just installed it and the cp doesn't appear different from the last one . . . i imagine this is more of an "issue resolver" . . . i didn't have any issues with 4.8; but then i already finished (and discarded) Doom iii and was only playing Max Payne II [nice game, good gfx, smooth running, Xlnt gameplay BTW; unfortunately the story was crap compared with the first one - it answered too much :p ].

Once you have .NET (and don't FORGET the .NET patch!), it isn't much bigger than the regular CP and i do see some advantages . . . well it is moving in the right direction to make it easier for n00bs while retaining advanced settings for the tweekers. ;)

a reluctent 'thumbs up'
(i'd be less reluctant if i liked change)

Yeah I know but I like keeping in touch with the best drivers and any convenient program. Just turns out that the CCC was about as useful as a trojan on my machine.

Perhaps this time it is more Elcs-friendly, nevermind user-friendly.
