That's quite amazing, actually. I wonder what ramifications this will have down the road?

He's right. Only North Korea is a "true" communist country. Even there, it's more like a weird blend of Stalinism and National Socialism. Cuban society is still technologically backwards and I think they know they can't keep antagonizing the west forever.

I think you'll see Cuba transition more to a populist socialism like Venezuela, Bolivia, and Nicaragua. Still state controlled but more open to free enterprise and opposition.

Cuba has the potential to become quite wealthy if they play their cards right. I wouldn't be surprised to see it turn into a China or Vietnam.

Geez it only took him the majority of his life time and the lives of thousands of people jailed, executed or exiled by his communist regime to figure it out. Talk about a slow learner.

Well, you know what they say... When the Devil gets old he becomes religious...

A change of heart in his old years, this isn't uncommon at all, we've seen the same with many leaders.

Only in this case the only proper reply is ... no shit?

I wonder if there's pressure behind the scenes on Castro to make amends to get the US to ease or outright lift the embargo.

We need more information. I mean if it's that simple wouldn't he be declaring a transition to a liberal democracy? Maybe he's just referring to reforms? Otherwise, WTF man.

Isn't that ALWAYS the case when a politician changes his mind? I'm not joking, this is the case every single time that happens...

So congrats, captain obvious.

Castro is not in charge. he has no power to declare anything, anymore--and in his recent talk reinforced that he has no political power--to direct economic, social systems at least...

Obama is getting senile and going off-script. He and his brother are worth at least $1bn.

While not technically having power, I'm sure he's still got clout to influence his brother to make changes if he wants to. Too bad he didn't realize all of this long ago.

Let's hope it's not a LIBERAL DEMOCRACY, i heard from Spidey and xjohn that that is much worse than THEOCRACY or TERRORISM or COMMUNISM, or at least the same thing!!!!

He's already got a dodge worked out: "That wasn't REAL communism."

I think, like Gaddafi, he's just too old to care about old battles anymore. He just wants access to The Mayo Clinic and to be able to import as much Johnnie Walker Diamond (or whatever) he can drink.

...In the meantime, nations with a blend of mostly socialism and some capitalism such as the Scandinavian countries are doing well and have some of the world's highest standards of living.

They also have a combined population that is smaller than the New York metro area.

Almost dying sure makes oneself take stock. I'd be interested in reading the entire interview.
