According to http://www.perezhilton.com/ Fidel Castro is dead and they're going to make an announcement today.

Why I see it there before CNN or otherwise is strange, fake? They're usually true even though gossipy.

Sources reveal exclusively to PerezHilton.com that U.S. officials will be holding a press conference shortly to announce the death of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.

South Florida police organizations are calling in reinforcements before the announcement is made, we?re told.

PerezHilton.com was the first media outlet in the world to break the news of Castro?s death. We posted THIS ITEM on it last week!!!!

Well if true and with our elections, perhaps we can finally work towards normalizing our relations.

This is the best post i have read in this forum, a man who looks forward instead of looking back.

It would be great for both Cuba and the US, perhaps most for the population of Cuba, if the relations were normalized.

resorts would spring up in minutes, their economy wouldn't know what hit them.

That would be the best news to hit that country in a few decades. Raul seems much more amenable to reforms and opening the country up.

On Friday, the rumors heated up again for the third week in a row: Fidel Castro's death would be announced, first at 2 p.m., then at 4, then at 5.

For the past year, since the Cuban government announced that Fidel had ceded power to brother Raúl following intestinal surgery, rumors that he's on the brink of meeting his maker keep boiling over and dying down, creating a roller coaster of emotion for exiles and islanders.

This Friday, teary callers told Ninoska Pérez of Radio Mambí they were sure this was it, and Pérez, as usual, reminded ``The moment will come, but this is not the moment.''

At Aaction Home Health in Hialeah, office workers were abuzz because somebody from Cuba called a colleague to say folks in Havana were starting to take to the streets in anticipation of the news. At the University of Miami, media relations officers worked the phones in search of confirmation.

But once again, none of the rumors seemed to be panning out.

It should have happened long ago. People need to stop holding grudges. The Cuban embargo accomplished nothing positive for either country.

butbut... they're omgcommies!

seriously, though, I agree with you... I don't really think the embargo has accomplished anything except maybe fostering Cuba's ties with Venezuela.

I could not agree more, the only thing it accomplished was as a way for the Cuban regime to use it as propaganda for the people.

It's the same way with most embargoes with the exception of weapon embargoes.

The original intention of the embargo was to punish Castro for the nationalization of American interests.

The problem with embargoes is that unless you can controll all access, there will be those that seek to profit by running the embargo/blockade. then you have a limited supply of items, which usually goes to the hightest bidder or the strongest goon.

And the people have done a hell of a lot better under him as he's given them a larger share of things.

You're the one 'against the people'.

I'm not saying this to be insulting or to sound like "America: Love it or get the F out"

But if you like communism/socialism so much and you admire guys like Chavez and Castro, why not move to Cuba or Venezuela? Or some other country ruled by (what I view as) a socialist dictator? Why stay in America?

It's an honest question. I was tired of winter and wanted to live in a place that didn't have winter. So I moved to Hawaii. People get tired of the crazy politics and taxes in California and move to Arizona or Nevada. What's the difference?

Things are so much better that Chavez has decided to make himself President for life. To hell with the concept of letting the people vote for a leader, he knows what is best for them.

Honestly, who really cares. He's old, it was a given, transition may very well be smooth to that other dude who was in power when castro was "recovering".

Well, you gotta give him the benefit of the doubt because he's probably right. Afterall, these same people did vote him in and he's given them what they wanted, not what they _should_ get (if they were not stupid/ignorant/uneducated), so he probably does know whats better for them than they do. I hope they enjoy the ride they signed up for.
