I want to copy my Contact (Carl Sagan; Jodie Foster) audio book to CD so I went out to Micro Center and bought that cable that plugs to the stereo and line-in jack of the sound card. My question is will quality degrade as it is being transferred from the stereo to my hard drive? Also, I was about to use MusicMatch Jukebox 7.1 Basic to do this but found out only the professional version can record from the line-in port of the sound card. Any other software alternative?

There should be a slight quality loss in the conversion but not too noticeable. Make sure to record at a high enough sample rate/frequency (16-bit/44.1kHz for CD standard). As for software, you might want to take a look at this page. I haven't really messed around with many of these programs so I can't tell you what's good, sorry.

If it's just an audio book why don't you use the standard windows sound recorder and save it as a .wav file for almost no loss of signal quality? I thought audio books were mono anyways.

Couldnt you download it from WinMX or something simular... Since you already own it, i wouldnt see any legal problems with doing so...

Actually I remember reading some good things about Goldwave (www.goldwave.com). The site says the shareware is fully functional, which is good because a lot of the programs have recording limitations.

Not sure, but I think Sound Recorder limits the minutes you can record. If not, then can anyone confirm there won't be any noticeable sound quality loss and I'll use Sound Recorder.
