LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Nevada gambling regulators have warned casinos in the state about a card-counting program that works on Apple Inc.'s iPhone and iPod Touch that illegally helps players beat the house in blackjack.

Card counting itself is not illegal under Nevada gambling laws, but it is considered a felony to use devices to help count cards.

The Nevada Gaming Control Board sent a memo to casinos last week warning them of the program.

In blackjack, certain card counting techniques help players determine when they are likely to win a hand and adjust their bets accordingly.

Nevada learned of the program from gambling regulators in California, where officials at an Indian casino found customers using it and tipped state authorities.

You could use the phone with an app you get and just use the touch screen to keep a track of the count. Once the deck was in your favor then you raise your bets.

I would think that they record the high/low count on the iphone instead of remembering it.

Iris: So, what are you doing in Las Vegas?
Raymond: We're counting cards.
Iris: You're counting cards?
Raymond: We're counting cards.
Iris: That's interesting.
Raymond: We're counting cards.
Iris: I know you're counting cards, what else are you doing?
Raymond: Are you taking any prescription medication?

Dealers are trained to watch for suspicious behavior, you'd think that they would notice someone using a device while betting no? 😕

Yes but one story mentioned something about the screen was hidden or something along those lines, I got the feeling they couldnt actually see what the phone was being used for. Either way in Vegas they dont even let you talk on a phone at a table, they make you step away.

Keep the phone in your pocket and hit the buttons by feel. You really only need a couple of buttons to count cards.

LOL, you can't use an iPhone in your pocket to control anything other than volume.

Yep.

It's not hard and I'm not surprised of the warning. Casino's have been pretty lax about the use of cell phones at tables - meaning they see you pull it out and they tell you to leave the table "you can't have that out at the table", not haul you outta there for having an electronic device.

Not suspicious at all.

I never said it wasn't suspicious... I don't even own an iPhone.

Why can't you do that? You wear skin tight pants or something? With baggy pockets I can easily see enough room for a hand+phone. It can't be hard to memorize two corners on the screen to press.

Yeah. And if they're not going to notice you putting your hand in your pocket all the time, there are better devices to use than an iPhone.

That's a beautiful idea. Volume up to increase count, volume down to decrease, a little vibrate once the count got good - come on people! Think outside the box.

I don't think iPhone developers are able to use the volume buttons, because they're reserved for... volume. But if it's a jailbroken iPhone maybe they could.

The point though is that anything you could do with an iPhone in your pocket could also be done with something non-electronic in your pocket, but either way it won't fly at a Vegas casino where you will probably be noticed putting your hand in your pocket frequently.

Of course, you'd need to see the screen to know the counts. Kind of hard to do with the device in your pocket. 😉

Uh Oh!

Your shorts are on the highway...

Am I the only one that doesn't think the government should be spending our tax dollars to go after card counters? Isn't that a risk the casino accepts being that they're a gambling establishment? They have every right to tell people to leave if they're card counting but I don't think my tax dollars should go towards protecting casinos.

or you know, you could just count cards in your head.

They just throw you out for doing that anyhow.

only if you're winning. 😉

If you are counting cards and not winning then there is something wrong, you can have short term loses, but if you are doing it correctly including betting properly the odds are in your favor.

You could apply this terrible logic to most laws. Why should fraud be illegal? Why should your tax dollars be spent protecting people from their own stupidity?
