Cases where the movie was better than the book?

An atrocious book - the "let's all wish it never happened ending" is SUCH a cop-out

An appaling movie - cmon, that was the worst acting any of thopse actors have ever done!

This could be applied to every Michael Crichton book ever turned into a movie. I gave up on ever seeing a Michael Crichton book made into a good movie after the mockery they made of Jurassic Park, Rising Sun and Disclosure. Great books that got butchered by Hollywood. I saved myself the money and didn't see Timeline, especially considering Paul Walker's undoubtedly stellar performance.

Arrgh. That's good to know... my two copies (one a present) of Princess Bride arrived today and was curious how the the book and the movie compared.

Schindler's List by Steven Spielberg gives Thomas Keneally's novel a good run for the money.

Planet of the Apes (with Charlton Heston.)

You might be able to salvage the Princess Bride book if you flip past the "my sad life" pages between each chunk of the fairy tale. Using Peter Falk and the kid in the movie instead was a huge improvement.

I just read the book and will give it credit where credit is due: the best bits of dialog were taken straight from the book. Ultimately, the book falls short because of all the editorializing and discussion of S.Morgenstern's "satire". The movie is just pure gold...

Actually, that's a signature Crichton ending - Sphere, Andromeda Strain, Congo, etc. Does not take away from the technically oriented wonder prior to the ending.

Chrichton's technical accuracy is one of the reasons why I like his books. I can read through them without thinking 'WTF are they thinking, that's impossible'. He can explain things, make then feasble- he fills in the gaps so that it seems like it's something that can actually happen.

I'll admit that his endings aren't the most dramatic ever, but I don't think it ruins the books.

Both Bourne movie were equal to the books i'd say. Both stories are quite good.

13th Warrior wasn't too bad. (was based loosely on Eaters of the Dead)

Forrest Gump. The book really sucked. It made him out to be a foul-mouthed jackass. Not that I have anything against profanity as I use enough of it, but it just didn't sound right coming from Forrest. That's the only one I can think of. Well, maybe the Green Mile. I really enjoyed both the book and the movie. Maybe it was having to wait on the parts to be published that I didn't like. Weird...Tom Hanks in both of those examples.
