Caseless Computer?

I have a friend who is teaching 5th grade and she wants to get her students more interested in computers. As were were brainstorming I mentioned how kids were drawn to cases with clear side panels (and lots of lights lol). She asked me if a computer could be built, perhapse on a wall-mountable piece of plexiglass, without any case at all - so that all wiring, all components, etc. were, as Kramer would say, "out there."

I am sure it can be done, but can it be done without extensive modifications?

Nothing stopping you from doing something like that, except maybe a lawsuit when the kid of that McDonald's lady gets her finger cut by the fan of the CPU's HSF. And you can bet she'll have some hot coffee with her at the court room. 😛 I've seen computers mounted in beer boxes.

It could be done pretty easily, but it would collect dust like crazy

And you would have to come up with somewhere to mount the HDD, optical, floppy, etc...

Actually not, just as much as anything else in the room, and schools are usually pretty clean. The reason dust is attracted to computers is the negative pressure inside the case caused by exhaust fans. If you have intake fans as well the rate of dust collection decreases a lot.

actually wall mounted would be more fun for display purposes. and everything would be much more visible than it would if it were crammed together in a case.
and yes it wouldn't be very hard... but you would probably need a drill, some mechanical now how, and an old case to gut for: MB tray/template, makeshift mounting brackets for hd, psu, CDdrives, power/reset button.

Ive run computers on pizza boxes.. no problems at all. just need some brackets for the drives. mount everything on a chunk of plywood and hang it up..

edit oh yes , also a momentary contact switch for power on and the mb switch connector from an old case to connect it to the mobo. you could get by without that though, just use the screwdriver trick to power it up.

and get like 1 x-blade or gladiator or some special case and go like "the person who behaves the best gets to work on this case!" and get $10 cases for the rest of the students. Hanging it up on the wall or something could be fun and all, but with 5th graders, I really dunno.(no offense)
