ok so im working on a buddy of mines computer and for some reason, when i plug in the front usb ports (on the case) with a thumb drive or w/e that has a usb interface, the computer shorts out and turns off instantly!

are these usb's shot or??

i double and tripled checked, there pluged into the correct port on the mobo...

Do the pinouts on the cable match the pinout on the mobo? You may have to get a meter to be sure if you need to trace the signals from the external connector to the internal contacts. Sears had one on sale recently but IDK if still. IAC, they have some at good prices even if not on sale. Generally, to have that kind of failure you have to have the jack miswired or the contacts mislabeled so that the +5V is getting connected to something it shouldn't be.
