Case upgrade for no good reason - midtower or fulltower?

I'm sold on Antec. So they will be getting my money. Why am I doing this? I dunno. I have pretty decent airflow and I'm not out of space...but you know how this game goes...things could always be a bit faster/louder/cooler/etc.

I can't decide between the 840 (mid) and 1240 (full). I don't need all those 5.25 drive bays, but I might someday. The full also has more fan slots, though with 4 fans moving air across the mobo/cpu, I doubt I'd even need/use the 92mm spot on top. Also, with a full tower, aren't there probs with the IDE cables from the CDR's reaching the mobo?

I've looked at the pics/specs on their site Here a hundred times. I like them both. I like the midtower because it has really good airflow and isn't as big as the full, but I like the full because it would be "the last case I'd ever need", has hurricane airflow potential, but it's a BIG MUTHA. What do you guys think?

Look for something faster/quieter/cooler/etc. 🙂

I would go with the full tower,I might be getting one soon, anyway reason being lots of space,as for cooling go here for a review with temps click here .

Thanks for the replies guys. (Hey, that rhymes!)

Bacillus: I do need to play Q3A more. Reason is when I go online to play, I get fragged almost instantaneously. (I.E. I suck!) At least with UT, I can hang. Funny, they are basically the same game...I must just be a lame-o!

I just thought of something unpleasant (unfortunately, it's always something messing w/my program. I don't know if the full tower will fit in my desk...so my mind may be made up. The 840 has better cooling than my 282. I've modded my present case a bit. Dremeled out the metal grills blocking the front and rear fans and enlarged the "intake" for the front fan...but aside from cutting blowholes, there really aren't any other options for fans. With a vidcard upgrade coming, I'm expecting more heat. The GF2 GTS is already an indoor grill...I can only image what kind of heat the GF3 puts out.

I'll have to measure when I get home. BTW, The rear panel of the computer desk is cut open to allow the air from the rear fan to exhaust to the "outside world". Did 't want you guys to think I stuffed my case into an enclosed area! (Duh) 😕

Why not compromise and get the 1030 or 1040? If you don't mind the door, then it's a good alternative.

You might have get longer IDE cables when you go to a full tower depending on how you arrange your drives and how neat you like your ribbon cables to be. I have the InWin Q500 full tower and had to get longer cables for some of my drives because I like to tuck and fold them to keep things tidy.

Hi Shooters,

Thanks for the reply. I don't dig the door. It's definitley a personal preference. Nothing wrong with it, but it would get in the way for me, since my case is kept inside a desk, w/a door on it. Thanks though. 🙂

EDIT:
Ya know...it takes a big man to say he may be wrong. I'm feeling big today. The 1040 is a sweet case. It has the fan spot right in front of the HD cage, aiding greatly with airflow. I need to measure my desk. If the fulltower won't fit, then the 1040 may be a possibility..if I can get the drive bay door to open enough to insert CD's, while the case is sitting in the desk. We shall see. Have a good day.

Also the difference between the 840 and 1040 is an extra drive cage and an extra 5½ drive bay. Some 840's shipped with 2 cages but it was a mistake and the fan that blows on the hard drives didn't fit right.

MichaelD,

Yeah, I understand. I don't like the door either which is why I went with the InWin Q500 instead of that Antec. You might want to check out Addtronics cases also. Some of those are pretty nice.
