Case Making the Noise?

I've been toying around with my computer lately, hoping to reduce the terrible "FWOOOOSH" that plagues oh-so-many people. Like many, I'm not an overclocker, but I experience a lot of noise..
After isolating the pieces in my case (a steel mid-ATX) that potentially could be causing the noise, I found the HD (soon to be replaced), the HSF, and the case fan was the real problem.
I replaced my HSF with a 32 dBa fan and noticed almost no difference. I briefly unplugged everything but my 28 dBa case fan, and found that when INSIDE the case, it was far louder than it was outside.
I tightened the screws holding it in place, but it didn't make much difference. With no side-panel on, the fan was quite a bit less loud, but when the panel was put back on, it was back to it's annoyingly-loud self.

My only thought is that the case is a piece of junk and its vibrations are amplifying the sound. Has anyone had this problem? And can anyone recommend a relatively cheap case that this WON'T happen with?

Thanks!

Thanks for the fast reply 🙂
I've looked into getting some rubber spacers, but even the hsf is making considerable noise, and there is very little (if any) vibration in the motherboard, making me believe it might not make a difference to ease the connection between fan and case. Of course, I have a knack for being quite wrong 😉

i've had the same problem with my case side acting like a soundboard. I tried rubber grommets and I don't think they did squat but maybe I didn't install them optimally. I remedied the problem in two fasions: on one case, I replaced the Sunon case fan with a Panaflo, two actually and the noise disappeared. My other machine didn't fair as well with a fan replacement so I lined the case with a 3/8" rubber mat that came in a roll. Of course this added substantially to the weight of the case, but it did eliminate the vibration noise.

IIRC, there are three potential sources of noise from a case fan:
1) Fan motor itself,
2) Fan vibration, and
3) Air movement.

If I'm reading your post right, it sounds like it's 3 for your case fan that's your main problem. Is the fan mounted right infront of a steel punchout grill? Or is the fan blowing air right through some power / ribbon cables? I'd guess the former and that the "FWOOOOSH" is due to air being pulled into your case. One possible solution would be to bust out the Dremel, cut away and replace the prestamped grills with some airflow friendly wire ones. Just my $0.02.

Now if only I can remember where I put my rotary saw.... (do I even HAVE a rotary saw?... hmmm)

And just when I thought it might be as simple as buying some new case fans (or even buying a new case!) 😉

Thanks for the feedback!
