does anybody know where to get insulation for ur case that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? it seems like it's next to impossible to find anywhere that sells the stuff that i've read the reviews on, and the few places that carry it are in england and want way too much money. anybody else feel the same way?

I assume you are talking about sonic insulation...can you link some reviews to what you are looking for?

you're correct in assuming that i'm talking about sonic insulation. i don't remember specifially where the review was that i read, but i'll try to do a little digging. i'm not looking for any particlar brand, just something that will work decently for not too much money.

I don't see why this wouldn't work so here it goes:

Buy some spray on car sound deadener...availlable at a pepboys/kragen.

Spray it onto the backside of the case cover/s and any othe panels you can remove, it should make your case pretty damn quiet and if need be you can always reapply later.

A tight, open-cell foam may work somewhat and will be uber-cheap. Normal egg-shell type foam is too porous and doesn't work very well, but small cell foam like that found in some drive packaging does the job (particularly HP drives...strange stuff). Be wary of spray foams--this is said only because I saw an 'oops, don't do this' write-up where a guy used Great Stuff foam in his case to deaden sound. It dried and expanded/contracted enough to warp the side of his case and dissallow him to put it back on eventually destroying his case. The foam that S13SilviaK mentions may not do this--I simply don't know, but use caution if you go this route.

I think the spray-on automotive undercoating would do as much good as any of the expensive insulation you are looking for.

After testing with Dynamat Extreme i've concluded insulation makes little difference since sound radiates from all holes and drive bays.

I agree. I used a sound deadener for a while and I still got all the sound from my blow holes. Was worth a shot though.

see 2cooltek.com (i think that is the address)....you can purchase that foam there and in fact you can find an article where he installs the foam and documents the results and what sort of noise reduction you can expect

I think Soldat is talking about THIS .
Alos, some autoparts stores ( Pepboys, Autozone ) carry Thermoshield. It's used for sound insulation under cars hood, floor boards and door panels. And it's pretty cheap, under $20 gets enuff to do aprx 3 to 4 cases.

Duh. Sorry sould have read all the way through, don't think ya got Pepboys or Autozone in England . Sorry

so is the general consensus from ppl that have tried it that insulation doesn't really have much effect at all on a relatively quiet case?

my case is already pretty quiet. running 4 panaflo L1A's, svc gc68, barracuda IV, enermax whisper ps. was just looking for some way to really make this baby next to silent. :)

Highly unlikely you are going to completely silence your computer unless you start spending $200 on sound proof cabinet enclosures.

Noise comes from every panel, crack, hole and fan duct so unless that noise is sealed in a cabinet and muffled through an exhaust.. it will have to be there.
