Dear all,

I have one question regarding my case fans. I have an old Coolemaster Cosmos case. It came with 4 fans before 5 years i bought it (never replaced them yet). The connectors have 3 wires only (I assume the PWM cable is missing here?)

In BIOS or in FanXpert application in windows, Fan_1 reports 0 or N/A (But I can see that the fan is actually spinning) while others about 500-800 RPM. Can these fans be controlled regarding their speed? Or shall I order new fans which support PWM?

Please enlighten me here please.

It depends on the board, but I know I have had motherboards that didn't read below a certain speed threshold (in the BIOS) with very much accuracy. Are you saying these fans can't be controlled, or you can't tell what the speed is? In my experience Windows programs such as HWMonitor give more accurate (and timely) numbers.

It would help a lot to know what model motherboard you have.

I have z87-deluxe mothrboard. It supports 4 fan controllers and 2 cpu fan controllers. Regarding the 4 case fans, the three are reporting their speeds and the other one doesnt. The two of them run at about 1000RPM and the other at about 600RPM and the GUI shoes the speed in Red.

I was looking at the manual for your board, and it looks like all connectors are 4-pin. My best answer is, it depends. I have had 3-pin fans that worked with fan-control systems, but I believe if you want the fans to work by temperature control, 4 pins are required. It just depends on how Asus has implemented the system on this board.

Thanks for your answer. Do you suggest any specific fans?

Panaflo is a great fan, but I don't know if they do 4-pin. Noctua has a great airflow to noise ratio, but you are going to pay for it. I have always been a fan of Cooler Master and Delta fans, but there are plenty of other good brands out there.
