Case fan on a CPU heatsink?

Is there a difference between the run-of-the-mill case fan and the fans you see on a stock or cheap replacement CPU hsf? A friend has an AMD S754 with a fan on it that sounds like a jet. Could I just get her a quiet 60mm case fan and put it on the CPU heatsink?

You could use a regular case fan if you don't mind it running at full speed all the time. Otherwise, you can get a fan with PWM support so that the motherboard can control the fan speed. Like one of these:

It would be nice to know which HSF your friend has, you can't just slap a fan on every heatsink. Also, quiet 60mm fan that's enough to cool a CPU heatsink? Sounds kinda impossible..

60mm fans are never quiet unless they are stopped. The bigger the fan, the quieter and cooler they are.

Depending on the heatsink and its fittings, it is possible to either build or buy an adapter (metal or clear-acrylic) which can then be used to fit a larger fan to the sink. But I doubt that these options are easily accommodated to a stock Intel heatsink. I say "not easily" -- but not impossible.

http://www.buyextras.com has a good selection of 60x25mm fans. I bought a 70x25mm Evercool fan for my HS and it does a lot better job than the original 70x15mm fan even cranked back to 2300 rpm where it is pretty quiet. buyextras, SVC, jab-tech and Nexfan have decent selections of 60x25mm fans.

Tip: fan adapters generall don't do well on CPU heat sinks as they increase the back pressure - you have to use a pretty strong fan to overcome it. Better to buy a whole new HS with a larger fan.

it depends on the system config.

i have a Noctua heat sink in a Vista system. the Noctua
has a 120 mm fan, and the case fan next to it is 120 mm.

in that configuration - "Case fan on a CPU heatsink?" - yes you
can do it.

That's a swingin' deal on the Coolermaster Jhhnn. I wish I could do more than one on the rebate as the shipping only goes up a few cents. Still 7.25 for a $30 dollar hsf is GREAT. I was leaning toward just slapping one of these on there. I see that various HSFs use various bearings (sleeve/ball/fluid/etc) and that was my concern -- whether or not the construction of the fan was such that the case fans were more dispensable than a fan that would come on a CPU HS. Anyway, all good stuff here; thanks to all
