I saw a post by Sohcan, I think, a couple months ago that explained why Athlons didn't have as much bandwidth as Pentiums. It was related to factors such as architecture and CPU cache. I happen to remember the numbers he gave which were 1.075 MB/(Mhz-s) for the Athlon XP (w/ 256KB cache) and 1.25 MB/(MHz-s) for a Pentium 4 Northwood. The actual bandwidth the processor needed was found by multipling the CPU frequency by the proper coefficient. A 2GHz Athlon required 2.15MB/s while a P4 2.26GHz required 2.825MB/s. Sohcan knows what he's talking about, but I've wondered about this. Anyway, my point is that Athlons don't need as much bandwidth as the P4's, and with the 512KB Athlon coming out in a few weeks, the Athlon will require even less.
AMDs run a 2x fsb so it would make sense that cas latency would be more important, whereas an intel runs a 4x fsb and has access to more bandwidth. (making it less sensative to latency)
i also just noticed that if you compare the 2 intel test systems...
the 333ddr system benifits more from aggressive cas settings then the 400ddr system does.
