cas 2

I have cas latency 2 ram that runs at 2.5 by default. Is it ok to just change the setting without changing something else like the voltage?

If you are sure it is CL2 RAM, it should be fine, although you may want to test with something like memtest and/or Prime95 to make sure you are still stable at that setting.

Worst case is it won't boot and you'll have to clear the CMOS settings to get it to come back up (which should put it back at CL2.5).

Oh ok. What I have is the Ocz Performance series which is marked to be cas 2. Is there anything else that I could do to safely modify the speed or so, and how long would I need to run prime95?

-Thanks.

You should be able to alter the timings in the systems CMOS. It is perfectly safe to do so - as has been said, the worst that can happen is your system won't boot, and you'll have to clear the CMOS; you won't damage anything.

If you're going to test memory, you want to use memtest, not Prime95.

If its the performance series, you'll be ok. Set the timings to 2-3-3-6 (CAS-TRCD-TRP-TRAS) and you should be set.

I've seen situations where I can go from passing to failing Prime95 by modifying memory timings, yet memtest will pass at both settings. Memtest is very good at finding physically bad memory cells, but since it does not push the CPU to 100%, it doesn't always find borderline stability problems.

hmm... good to know.
