There was also a show in nick, I forget the name. It is Dexter esque but with full 3d animations, it was entertaining as well.

I turn on PBS for my kid in the morning and he watches Arthur and Martha Speaks, both of which I find to be very watchable.

This is a good thread to say this:

I absolutely can't fucking stand anything that DominionSeraph likes. It's actually a point of pride.

So, apparently I figure large in your value structure. You do not figure at all in mine.

Perhaps you like scat and bukkake. I really don't care. It affects me not at all.
Odd that the converse is not true, and instead my entertainment choices cause you to entirely redefine yourself in relation.

Is it a weak mind that makes you so dependent on such external signaling?

You're reading too far into it.

I said that you like stupid shit.

This cannot be disputed. Got my four year old hooked on Road Runner on youtube. Try getting kids in 60 years interested in anything from the 90s up until today.

Well, duh. Road Runner, Bugs Bunny, et al are little more than predictable and violent slapstick. Any four year old can appreciate Jerry fucking over Tom on a regular basis, but cartoons (the best ones) of the 90's and later actually go deeper.

EDIT: All of my favorites have already been mentioned, those being Spongebob, Dexter's Lab, Courage (although it's really inconsistent and prone to the aforementioned Tom & Jerryisms), Rocko's Modern Life, maybe the Powerpuff Girls (haven't seen it in years but I remember liking it), and a few others.

EDIT #2: Actually, I liked Time Squad quite a bit as well, although even with just two seasons it had a tendency towards redundancy.

Films are not like series. People rave about Akira but all it does is remind me of FFVII. Ghost in the Shell is MUCH bigger than the movie -- the movie alone is kinda... constrained.

Akira is an '80s movie. The scenes in FFVII were inspired by it, GITS, and other cyberpunk/New Age.

Or, we just think you have bad taste and like anime because it's cool and Japanese. You've ALREADY touched on Bleach, Final Fantasy VII (yes, specifically VII), and many other Anime-lamer landmarks in this thread.

I was thinking of including Ben 10 but I've never seen enough of it to fully judge. What I have seen seems like quality though.

I *HATE* Ben 10. If I had kids, they wouldn't be allowed to watch it because I don't want them growing up retarded. "Ohh! Magic AND pseudo-SciFi! Me entertained!"

Gargoyles.

There's no way I'd compare a movie to a series like Bleach or Code Geass. Even a short series like Puella Magi Madoka Magica (12 episodes) has a sweep that you can't get in a single movie. (The first two are very Western -- Bleach being entry-level anime and Code Geass just a hair more complex. Puella Magi Madoka Magica [pictured in my second post] is... considerably more, and going to take greater familiarity with certain Japanese storytelling styles.)

LOL. The guy says he doesn't like Anime and you recommend Bleach as a way to get into it? Bleach==DBZ==YuYu==The other million fighter Animes. Bleach isn't western at all. It's an extremely over-the-top-fight-for-my-friends standard fighter Anime stuff that most people think of when they say "I hate Anime".

GITS and Spirited Away are 2 very different films aimed at very different audiences and not what your typical Anime hater thinks of when they think Anime.

If someone watches both of those and doesn't like either one, I'd say they don't like Anime, or any animated shows.

On topic Johnny Bravo, Dexter, and Powerpuff Girls were all pretty great kids cartoons. But I also own the Looney Tunes Golden Collection DVD b/c nothing beats 'em.

I suggest Akira, Cowboy Bebop, Memories, and GITS when probing for Anime tastes. NEVER DBZ, Bleach, Naruto, Spirited Away, Evangelion, etc.

I agree. However there are a few that I think will still stand the test of time. Not that anyone will know them in 60 years but Batman TAS and a few others might still be just as watchable.

Oh and another question for those who like these kidy cartoons. What's your age? 29 And I have no problem watching kids cartoons, assuming they are good which lots aren't as I said in the OP.

Oh and Transformers cartoons of 80's... Animation pretty dated and dialogues extremely cheesy, but a great way to understand the universe of transformers.

Akira is an '80s movie. The scenes in FFVII were inspired by it, GITS, and other cyberpunk/New Age.

And FFVII does it better.
What inspired what has nothing to do with quality on an individual level. Akira just does not stand up anymore, IMO. GITS is decent, but not mind-blowing by any stretch. It certainly does not sum up the series.

If someone has gotten their idea of anime from Akira, GITS, and Dragon Ball Z, it's gonna be an understanding so narrow so as to be useless.

I'd suggest someone on a course from Vandread (introduces you to the anime style of throwing you into the middle of the story without explaining a goddamn thing), through Cowboy Bebop and into Bleach (because Bleach will be running in the background forever with 335 episodes and counting), then add on FLCL and Gurran Lagann and maybe a Gundam series.
Really basic but covers a spectrum.
Akira and GITS can be picked up later as filler. There's no hurry in either.

Probing != simply suggesting something to watch. If you have someone impressionable who will follow your follow-up suggestions, Akira would be useful to get an idea as to their tastes. I would not suggest it to someone whose tastes were more set, though.

As for Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, and Neon Genesis Evangelion (never seen Spirited away), I agree that those aren't good intros. I dropped Dragon Ball Z at the fight with Frieza. (couldn't even finish the fight.) I tried Naruto and dropped it after wincing my way through 6 episodes. Neon Genesis Evangelion is ok, but it's probably not going to engender a great liking for anime.

Bleach is not those, though. Just because /a/ shows tsun-tsun for all the Big Three doesn't mean they feel they are equal. They certainly have a special place for Rukia.
