More power is a waste of gas. Car companies should be building lighter cars that are more fuel efficient. They reason they don't is because the oil companies are in collusion with them

By a Hybrid the honda has 80HP and it gets like 70+ MPG

The Dodge avenger was not meant to have power. It was supposed to be a value car that looks sporty. Hence the cheap sub 15k price. I don't think you can squeeze 280HP into a $14,000 car. I do however think that the stock Mustang needs a little more power to at least be able to compete with Firebirds and Camaros

Mustangs aren't meant to keep up with a Camero out of the box. Making Mods to a Stang is Much easier and a lot less expensive.

Dodge just needs more power in all their cars except for Viper :)

Hi Rossman,

That Corolla will easily last to 200,000 miles if it's caken care of right, and should be a fairly nice ride for the next 4-6 years. $5,000 was probably a little high, but don't sweat it. If it hasn't started to rust at all, one could do much worse for 5G.

nippyjun: you are wrong. look at a 350 hp engine 25 years ago. probably got 14 mpg highway. look at the corvette LS1 engine. 340 some horsepower, gets about 26 mpg highway. do you even know how an engine works?

The Cadillac Escalade was way underpowered, along with most SUVs on the road today. Thank god Cadillac is being smart and releasing the 2002 Escalade any month now with 345hp!

Also, BMW 318 is one of the most underpowered cars on the road. 1.8L engine in what is considered a luxury vehicle? Give me a break!

Garfang,

Well that's really news to hear that the car should last until about 200,000 miles. Fortunately that's about another 5 years at which time my sister will probably buy a new Honda Accord. But do you really think an excellent condition 1990 Toyota Corolla 4 door automatic with only 67,000 miles and new timing belt for $5,000 is expensive? Although I wouldn't consider it a "bargain" I don't think she paid to much. $4,500 would have been nice and no it hasn't shown any signs of rusting yet. Just a little rattling and highway road noise but what do you expect in a compact sedan that's 10 years old.

RossMAN: that Corolla will keep on ticking as long as it's maintained properly! Our Corolla has been in two major accidents (once we rear-ended a Volvo, and once we were rear-ended by a Ford F-150 truck). The car still runs fine. The bodywork in the rear is not as good as it was before the accident, but that's because we had an incompetent person fixing the body. The engine still runs great, starts up the first time..everytime! I've taken it up to 160km/h and it stayed on the ground..I've done a few neutral drops (by accident) and the tranny still runs fine. Once I even put it in "Reverse" while the car was moving forward (really slowly though..I accidently put it in reverse). The tranny still held up. I think its time for a tranny flush though.

I'd suggest that you do an engine flush..it does wonders..atleast for me. Gets rid of all the carbon buildup in the engine. And the body will be fine..won't rust for a long time. We had a special paintjob done on it from the dealer. It's always looks waxed..and water runs off the body faster. Surprsingly the Corolla has better paint than the '99 Maxima (which always gets chipped).

The only thing that doesn't work anymore is the cruise-control. That's it.

<< Ford Focus wagon. Man, if they could shoe horn the 2.5 DOHC Duratec V6 into that car, you'd have yourself one fun ass ride on your hands. >>

vi_edit, I have a friend here in Atlanta that is gathering parts to put a 3.0L DOHC Duratec V6 into a Focus ZX3 (hatchback). He's using the top end of the SVT 2.5L combined with the bottom end for the 3.0. He's expecting around 250HP and 200+ pounds of torque. That'll be a screamer.

The SVT Focus will be out in the fall using the 2.0L Zetec that has been massaged to 170HP.

boys you have not been underpowered until you have driven a volkswagon camper van with the 1600 engine. one does not include acceleration into any driving scenarios. almost forgot, audi 5000 with a DIESEL engine. Horrible.

the 1989 cadillac series, v8 with 150hp, vroom vroom. They did have the torque though. The Avenger was canned in favor of a sporty car that could actually go fast, as the Stratus R/T, and boy, can that thing haul.... I want one.

How about the Tibeuron? It looks pretty cool, but doesn't have much under the hood.

The Eclipse doesn't need more power, it needs a diet.

My care has 5 less horsepower, is a sedan, and out accelertes and out corners the eclipse. It's an SVT Contour.

Actually the `01 Neon R/T is quite a screamer considering it's price and weight (150hp/138ft-lb torque). I drove a buddy's new R/T this weekend and was actually impressed, nice pocket rocket for $15K.

Thorn: yeah and consider the 5.9L V8 in a compact truck, whoa! But seriously the most notorius lack of power I have ever seen has to be a 72 Vega Station Wagon....well at least until you put a V8 in it.

SVTPower: ummm no....mods for a small block chevy always have been and always will be cheaper than the mods for any ford motor. If you are talking about mickey mouse crap like exhaust and FI Plenum changes, well those may be cheaper for the Ford, but that is only because they should have been stock!

My car has a rip-roaring 84HP, but it's actually not so bad since it weighs about 250lbs. :D --->1989 VW Fox GL
