Cars 2 - Pixar's first flop?

MrChad

I'm a huge Pixar fan and I've enjoyed every one of their full-length films up to this point. I've been looking forward to Cars 2 because my 3.5 year old son is a huge Cars fan. But after viewing the latest trailer, I'm having my doubts as to whether this movie will live up to Pixar's reputation.

I hope I'm wrong. Maybe the trailer is just terrible.

Trailers are not movies.

Example: I thought The Happening looked like an interesting intersting and good movie from the trailer.

I would think they are going to deliver the goods on Cars 2. Practically every boy I know from 2 years old to 12 loves this move and buys all the toys, slippers, backpacks, etc. that goes with it. I would think this movie is one that everyone is looking forward to and I doubt Pixar will let it fail. Plus I think WALL-E was the first flop 😉

oh no you didn't... I liked Wall-E 🙁

lol - I liked it to. I just wanted to take a dig at b/c I was a little put off that is was like "Humans destroy stuff and are bad, fat, and lazy". But there is some truth to it too. Anyway, I don't want to make this thread into a WALL-E discussion so I apologize. I'm definitely looking forward to Cars 2 though.

Just because you didn't like the movie doesn't mean it flopped. That's like saying Transformers 2 flopped.

Cars is my least favorite as well. It was okay, but very much doesn't warrant a sequel. For the most part Pixar has always had original ideas with no sequels except for Toy Story. If they start doing sequels to more of their stuff I think it'll just cheapen their image in my eyes. Every movie is radically different from Toy Story, The Incredibles, Monsters Inc, Wall-e, etc and all of them pretty much awesome. If any of them DON'T deserve a sequel it's Cars.

Only reason Cars is getting a sequel is because of how much merchandise sells for it compared to other Pixar films. If The Incredibles or Monsters Inc sold the amount of merchandise Cars does, those would be the ones getting sequels instead.

Is it just me or does Cars seem to be the most merchandized of all the Pixar movies?

My kid has Cars-branded EVERYTHING. I see it in stores more than even Mickey Mouse stuff.

:hmm: But why does Cars sell more merch? I'm just curious as to why, I'm not questioning it as I definitely see more Cars related stuff myself... but why that one in particular? I mean sure, it's about Cars which kids like but kids also like pretending to be monsters and robots are always cool. You can put anything on a t-shirt, and they make toys about everything. I mean the incredibles are about friggin superheroes, though that was a more 'adult' feeling movie as well.

Doesn't make any sense. I also see a ton of Nemo stuff which is even stranger. At least kids have always liked playing with cars and trucks... usually they aren't big on fish. :\

Kids... how do they work?

I thought the movie was pretty good, one of the better Pixar ones actually. Certainly much better than Up and Wall-e. My nephews have watched Cars at least 500 times, they own pretty much everything cars, shoes, bedspreads, cups, toys, etc etc etc etc . Just about every kid I know loves that movie.

I always figured that Monsters Inc would sell more merch like you but I really don't know why either. The amount of merch it sells means girls like Cars merch too and it's not really as girl friendly as other Pixar movies I'd think as the only girls in Cars are older women playing them.

insanity.

Wall-E was their best film, by far.

Though, yes--probably not as successful as the others. Not a flop, though, I think.

Ah, wasn't A Bug's Life the closest they came to a flop? It was definitely the least well-received.
I've never seen Cars...

Little boys love race cars. Hot wheels, matchbox etc.

The real question is why isn't Finding Nemo available on Blu-Ray yet?

I *think* (as with Toy Story 1) Nemo was rendered at sub 1080, maybe even sub-720 resolution?

I could be wrong on this, though. truly fucks things up when the content is pure digital.

same issue with the shitty new Star Wars movies. Not that any sane person would care to own those, though.

Yup, it's big b/c even young kids (my son is 2 1/2) like the Cars movie b/c it's racing, cars driving around, lights, some action, etc. and it's not scary (except maybe the combine part). My son did not like Toy Story and got up and left b/c he didn't understand the inside jokes and stuff he's too young. But kids of all ages like cars and they market pajamas, toys, books, everything! cars.

I have my doubts about a lot of their movies when I watch the trailers. At this point I've decided to stop trying to judge their movies by them since I usually like the movie far more than I think I would based on the trailer.
