Carry and conceal permit

For those ATOT members that have a permit, when and where do you usually carry? Do you typically just keep a gun in the glove box or do you have it in a holster?

I wore one on my hip yesterday and it felt somewhat awkward. Was thinking of maybe just leaving it in the glove box instead. Maybe it just takes some time to get used to it.

I have a P3AT and I just keep mine in the car. I used to keep mine in my glove box but I was worried about it getting stolen so I have it hidden behind the radio column next to my gas pedal; its pretty accessible and if someone breaks into my car they wont' find it. As far as public goes; I only carry in risky, strange, new places; such as going on vacation, rock concerts or other outdoor events I may attend occasionally. There aren't too many risky building I go into.

What gun do you have that feel awkward? I know my gun is only a .380 ACP but its so small that it fits in no matter what i'm wearing and its invisible... I'd rather have that than exposure or awkwardness.

24/7/365...excepting when I'm showering or asleep (or on the VERY rare instances I'm somewhere I can't carry, like a plane).

If you're not going to carry, get a lockbox mounted under your seat, or some other location in your car. Just putting in the glove box is an invitation to losing it to theft. Also, be careful putting it in and taking it out, as that's when accidents happen and when it gets seen by the public who then create an uproar.

Also, you may want to double check the local laws. I've never heard of a place where it was illegal to carry in the car with a permit, but I imagine there could be some.

Thanks for the info guys.

leegroves86 - I was carrying a Glock (19) 9mm compact in a Blackhawk holster. You can tell that have something on my hip and I was expecting it to be a little more concealed. I also have a SW MP 40c, but need to find a holster for it. I'd prefer to carry it and keep the Glock at home.

PrinceofWands - The only time I plan on putting it in the glove box would be while a work since I can't have it inside the building. Fortunately, my car sits outside my window and the area is very low risk. I doubt you would ever see any trouble in that area, but to and from work is a different story. In Georgia from what I've read, the state is the only governing body allowed to pass laws concerning firearms and the permits are given by the counties. The only awkward local law was that a city to the north required all residents to have a gun in their home. The law however was recently repealed.

A general question I have is the affects of a hot car if the gun is stored inside. Anything necessary beyond the normal cleaning?

I live in IL, so never. Which is weird cuz I carried a gun at work for almost 4 years straight.

Any talk about allowing that in IL? I noticed that you have nearly 4 states that border you which allow concealed weapons.

I've been wearing this same condom since 1986!

No chance.

Can't carry (or even own) one currently due to parental and University restrictions (no guns in the dorms, parents say no guns in the house and won't let up), but I fully intend to live in a concealed-carry state and own some sort of subcompact once I get my own place. Almost everything I wear has cargo pockets, and I figure mounting a holster in them shouldn't be too difficult. If it doesn't have cargo pockets, chances are I'll be wearing a jacket, so obviously no issue there.

I'll probably get some sort of shotgun for home defense. Of course I also fully intend to take a firearms course to learn how to use/maintain the things, but from what I can tell it isn't rocket science.

When I am in states that I am permitted to carry, I generally carry when I am outside the home/my parking lot. I don't carry into my office (I work for the govt at a statutorily banned location) or into my school (thought I will have it on me around campus at night).

What he said.

P3AT in front right pocket. Small and lightweight, no excuse not to have it.

I usually carry. I've been slacking lately because I've been on the bike & I think it peeks out from under the back of my jacket. I need a smaller gun - Kel-tec P3AT, Ruger LCP, etc.

Motorcycle.

You need a good holster. Try a Comp-tac M-tac or minotaur holster, they are extremely comfortable but conceal really well.

I usually carry when I am not at home - including carrying at work. I typically carry a J-Frame S&W .357 in my front pants pocket, a 1911a1 in a Comp-Tac M-tac, or a HK P7 in a milt sparks.

I'll have to look into those- I have a Bianchi CarryLok now.

I just finished serving jury duty in a murder trial. The opening witness was a gentleman that left his gun (Springfield XD .40) in the trunk of his car, which was stolen. Please, please , please don't be that guy.

Right now I carry my wife's Ruger LCP (she does not have her permit yet) for around town and my XD .45 on my hip (open carry) when hiking. WA has pretty good laws regarding concealed and open carry so I feel pretty fortunate. Right now with my XD I'm just using the plastic holster it came with, anyone have a better suggestion for comfortable, open carry while hiking?

There are few times that you'll find me without my 1911 in an IWB holster or PPK in a pocket holster. Basically, unless I am in a prohibited area, I am carrying.

Leaving a gun in a glovebox seems pointless to me if you can carry it. Chances are, when the time comes that you actually need your gun, your glove box is not going to be close enough.

Getting use to a holster can be difficult... different holsters work for different people. Personally I have 3, but use my smartcarry by far the most followed by my CTAC in a very distant 2nd.

Obligation of Carry. - must watch for any concealed carry holder or maybe even those that wonder why we carry.

why the fuck do you guys need to be carrying guns in public?! Are you guys in law enforcement or overcompensating, or just live in shitty areas?
