Carrier workeres screwed over by Trump

I still say that it's amazing that Carrier even agreed to keep the Indy facility open.

It's old, it's actually in a shitty location (truck access in and out can be a real hoot) and it barely looks busy even when you go into the production floor.

I've picked up from both the Indianapolis factory, and the one in Lewisburg, TN; and I prefer the one in Lewisburg, even though it's in a small town almost in the middle of nowhere.

I wouldn't be surprised if Carrier abandons plans to automate the Indy plant, and just lays off the remaining workers after the beginning of next year.

Perhaps I misunderstood the article:

"'And by the way, that number is going to go up very substantially as they expand this area, this plant,' Mr. Trump 'So the 1,100 is going to be a minimum number... You're going to have a good Christmas'

Only 700 union jobs were saved. Six hundred others will be lost, and Carrier is not paying a price. The company actually received a $7 million incentive package from Indiana to keep the plant open with a reduced work force.

The first round of layoffs will take effect next month, and the second in December -- three days before Christmas."

Trump: Trump said "as this plant expands, more jobs will be added"
Reality: Jobs are going to Mexico
You: Trump is doing what he said.

Can you clarify?
You pretty much nailed it exposing Trump's exaggerated claims. Remember this is a guy who deliberately outsourced the building materials to his towers to save money so if you put your eggs in his basket shame on you.

Just like Ford halted sending their plant to Mexico..so they could send it to China. These old plants where little to no capital investment has occurred will all go away soon. NUMMI was an exception as it didn't cost Tesla much money to acquire. I hope that they can continue to grow and expand providing qualified workers with employment.

I don't know about "responsible" but I don't like it.

I had my news-feed filled with celebrations that "trump was already MAGA" when it was announced by Trump he had struck a deal with them and the jobs weren't going to be sent to Mexico.

I find it really upsetting that even this small victory turned out to be a lie. It also seems to be part of his greater all-spectacle no-substance style of doing things - a dangerous way to run the most powerful nation on earth.
Right. I agree with all of this, but Indus' answer to buckshot asking why the title pins responsibility on Trump was "Trump could rape him and he still would say Trump loves him." This is a baffling answer for someone asking how Trump is responsible/how the title makes sense. It doesn't honestly discuss the real issues with Trump and his style of doing things. It's just attacking anyone who dares ask a valid question before people ignorantly run with that idea.

Not to derail but Carrier makes a shitty product. They used to make the best and now they make the worst. I purchased a Carrier central air and furnace for $10,000 less than three years ago. The air conditioner has broken down TWICE since then. The past month was brutal waiting for the POS to get fixed..... (the same part failed in both instances and they don't have the part widely available). They think reducing cost will help, it won't in the long term. I will NEVER buy a Carrier product again. They are garbage.

"In December, then-President-elect Trump told hundreds of workers at the Carrier manufacturing plant that he had worked out a deal to save their jobs.

...

"And by the way, that number is going to go up very substantially as they expand this area, this plant," Mr. Trump said. "So the 1,100 is going to be a minimum number."
Of course, forget what Trump actually said. It just gives people like buck breath an excuse to shoot the messenger.

Carrier employees perfect example of the gullible falling for Trump's slick talk. I don't blame them because their livelihood was on the line. They can thank the orange carnival barker.

The 600 were gone no matter what, was supposed to be 1300 but I guess you'd prefer all the jobs left? Instead of crapping on Trump you should be thankful for what he could actually get done. Pretty petty complaints.

Trump jumps in and saves 700 high paying union jobs and he's still the prick. Get a grip.

Nice goal post move. Btw I believe carrier has already committed to significant automation that will replace a significant % of the remaining jobs.

Sorry to hear you got ripped off. Without researching, i'll say an outsourced cheap junk part to bolster bottom line and keep investors satiated.

Their CEO said they'll spend $16M to automate the plant. Another poster suspected they will just go back on that too and move to Mexico anyway.

I think that's probably right. They'll have to pay IN back the $7M Pence threw at them but the cost savings over 10 years is certainly far more than that. UT will just wait till nobody is looking or cares. The bearing plant up the street simply ignored Trump and moved anyway, he did nothing.

This kind of thing is (IMO) a big reason why GOP politicians are winning elections. They have absolutely no compunction about straight-up lying to people about what they are going to get done, while the Democrats are seen as wishy-washy because they don't present a simplistic, non-starter solution to complex problems. These voters got exactly what they wanted to hear; I wonder how many of them asked "how, exactly, will these jobs be coming back?" I don't blame Trump and his ilk for jobs lost for companies going to more automation--hmmm, that didn't come up much in all the talk about lost jobs, did it....wonder why--but I can blame them for using the situation to their advantage and lying.

But mostly I blame the people that don't ask tough questions and just accept the lies. Democrats don't seem nearly as good at taking advantage of this, they need to up their game (or lower their game depending on how to look at it) if they want to win.

I wonder if some administration stooge will go on TV and claim Carrier has added 50k new jobs at the Indy plant.
I fully expect for Trump to come out and state that his administration creates 1 million new jobs each month....which might be true in the countries where ours are going to.😱😛

I too think this. "Automation" probably just means buying machines ( possibly discounted with the taxpayer dollars) which can be easily moved to another plant when the fire dies down.

My big question is what is Republican economics policy exactly? If this was a dem POTUS they would be crying "big govt intervention in private sector" and "picking winners and losers."

If you are going to get involved in free markets, at least do it right. This is a terrible outcome.

Trump derangement syndrome is rampant in this thread. 700 high paying union jobs are still in the USA and you're complaining that Trump said more would be coming (he didn't say when) and the planned losses are still happening. Its amazing. This is why your side is losing and will continue to lose.

What about the other 1800 jobs?

Ignorant conservaterrorist Trump fluffing as usual.

Trump claimed credit for saving 400 jobs that were never in danger and dangled false hope to the people who would be laid off that Carrier would maintain/expand. Those people are still loosing their jobs. I'd consider that grounds to feel betrayed on.

$20 says they wipe out the plant within a year and move everything to Mexico anyway now that the heat is off and Pence is no longer governor. Trump's bully pulpit approach has produced few tangible results. Mostly companies just shuffling PR around to give him cosmetic "wins" to tweet about.

I'd pay more for a furnace not made in a Trump state.
Yep, I don't even want another Subaru, which I like otherwise, because it's made in Indiana. Or Kentucky Toyotas, do you really want people who love ACA but hate Obamacare assembling your car?

I just bought a 2014 Impreza -- just looked it up and luckily they were still made in Japan at that point as I had assumed 😱 close call.

Keep that line going, your side will be winning elections any day now. 700 people still will have jobs that wouldn't have and Trump's the jerk.

I don't know how true it is, but one of the employees at the Carrier plant in Indy told me that one problem they have is outbound inventory storage, as the warehouse they use is partly owned by Amazon, and Amazon wants to buy the entire building.

Add in that the plant is relatively old, and expansion is financially out of the question, there isn't much of a reason to keep the plant going.

Yea, doesn't seem like there is realistically much of a future.
