Celebrities are voters too -- they can say whatever the hell they want. I don't lose respect for stars who endorse, but I do have the right to ignore them :)

Country singer Carrie Underwood may seem like America?s sweetheart, but just make sure you don?t ask her who she is voting for in this year?s presidential election.

?There is someone I do support, but I don?t support publicly,? gossip Web site Just Jared quotes Underwood as telling TV Guide.

?I lose all respect for celebrities when they back a candidate,? she said. ?It?s saying that the American public isn?t smart enough to make their own decisions.?

The American Idol alum added that she would never want ?anybody to vote for anything or anybody just because I told them to.?

Those may sound like harsh words, but Underwood thinks that musicians should stick to getting people away from ?all the BS.?

?Whether it?s from politics or just the world around you, music should be an escape,? she said.

They do think a little too highly of themselves if they think we should care about what they think simply because they are famous.

If I were Obama I'd have the Dixie Chicks play at his inauguration.

I think Tony Romo made a mistake in dumping her and choosing Jessica Simpson. I would have picked Carrie Underwood..

She's an idiot.

Stars are normal people also who happen to be able to get their own personal views out to a much larger audience. The fact that others are smart enough to realize that and to take advantage of it (no matter whether they are Alec Baldwin pimping Obama or Steven Baldwin pimping McCain) is something that most of us would do.

It's probably one of the main reasons internet boards and blogs are as popular as they are now. Everyone likes to think that they have something that someone somewhere wants to hear. Only the idiots (that's you Carrie) are too stupid to act on it.

Wow just wow
I'd rather people become EDUCATED VOTERS and take what they know and what they believe in and vote on that, rather than what stupid celebs are saying. I respect Carrie for what she said.

So you think endorsements are stupid? Well we use them all the time in our every day lives. If someone who you like tells you they like something, you tend to believe you will like it as well, it's called an information shortcut. This is not an unreasonable assumption, and it saves you ungodly amounts of time.

Educated voters know how to filter out the garbage. Saying that celebrities shouldn't use their status as a platform is stupid.

Should singers not use Global 8 or whatever it's called to get people to support famine and AIDS or whatever they are out there for? By your reasoning, people can think for themselves right? They should be able to go out and give money or raise awareness on their own without the help of celebs... RIGHT??

If anything, a voter identifying with a celeb might give them more motivation to go out and vote regardless of what their viewpoint is.

Didn't she ask for people's vote when she was on AI?

To me, it's HOW the platform of 'celebrity' is used. If, like Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon, you take the "Hey, we're Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon and we're here to tell you in this interview that we hate Bush." I have no problem with that. If, like Madonna, you take the "Hey, you paid a crapton of money to hear me sing and see me dance and now that you're here and captive I'm gonna spout my pseudo-Kabbalah made up crap at you", then I have a big problem with that.

If Underwood dislikes celebrities who use the Madonna model, I wholeheartedly agree. If she dislikes the celebrities who do it a loss less intrusively, I disagree.

That's your unfounded blanket assumption.

Celebrities are allowed to say who they endorse, this does not necessarily mean "they think we should care about what they think simply because they are famous."

Wait? What?

Where did I say or imply that the people who are on the receiving end of those opinions and/or endorsements should accept them as gospel, shut off their TVs, computers and radios, close up their books, magazines and newspapers and go all zombie-like?

I said that she is an idiot for not being so strong in her beliefs that she is unwilling to espouse them when she has access to the number of people that she does.

But I do agree with sactoking....timing is everything. If I'm paying to see you sing....STFU and perform Chim-Chim!

I don't think endorsements are stupid, I think people who are influenced by them are.

If I strongly endorse someone and someone put a camera in my face and gave me an opportunity to try to convince others, i'd take it. I don't see why I should hold a celeb to a different standard. I do agree that if someone stops their concert to try to convert you, it's a classless move. No problem with doing it during interviews.

Or if they're smart enough to use their celebrity as a vehichle to communicate what they have to say if they believe they have a reasoned position.

Ah, the irony of her giving per opinion about those who give their opinions. The intellectual 'cost' of 'free' speech is immeasureable....

She's a country star; if she doesn't support McCain, there goes her recording contract.
